Prologue - III

Incoming call: Ava ❤️ 11.27pm

Connor rolled onto his side and picked up his phone, frowning her rubbed his eye and answered the call.
"Hey Ava, what's up?"
"Oh you were asleep, sorry I shouldn't have called" he heared her breathed through the line.
Connor sat up in bed, waking up with each word Ava said.
"I'm sorry, go back sleep-"
"Ava whats wrong? Did something happen?"
He heard a few sniffles on the other line before Ava answered.
"My apartment got robbed, the police only just left. I just, I just needed to talk to someone" she whispered, wiping her eyes with the inside of her wrist.

"Hey, hey, thats okey. Here"

The screen on Ava's phone split to reveal a darkly like Connor still sporting some bed head. Ava was at her dining table, her mascara had ran into her bottom lashes and he eye liner had long faded.
"Hey it's okey Aves" he told her.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Um, I was out at a thing for the hospital, which is why, you know" she gestured to her dress and make up.
Connor smiled, "you look beautiful"
"Sure" Ava scoffed and wiped her cheek.
"Anyway I came home and my front door was busted in, they trashed my place. I called the police and then they had to come and take photos and everything, and they called a locksmith to get my door fixed" Ava put her head in her hand.
"Did they take anything valuable?"
"No" Ava said softly, "I had anything valuable on me" she touched a sting of pearls that hung from her neck.

Ava sat up again, "they found my safe but they left before they could get it open"
"I only have my passport and other documents in there, maybe about fifty dollars in Rand?"
Connor nodded and pursed his lips, "are you okey?"
Ava tilted her head, "yeah, I, I don't really know what I feel. I think I'm still in shock"
"Hang on" she picked up her phone and moved through her apartment.
"I need a distraction, tell me about things in Chicago" she said, leaving her phone facing up on her bed.
"Em, okey well at the hospital-"
"Not about work, if you can. Sorry I've just heard enough about hospitals for one night"
"Doris is pregnant"
"What" Ava picked up the her phone suddenly having changed into a hoodie and pyjama bottoms, "why didn't you lead with that"

Connor explained while Ava washed her face, removing her makeup. Her phone prodded you on the soap bottle.
"I want to clean, the place just feels so dirty now" she said, thinking out loud while Connor continued to talk.
Connor stayed on the phone while Ava changed her bedsheets, wiped down her counters, swept, unpacked some new throw pillows, cleared out her coffee table and hung up her new clean bedsheets to dry while putting a fresh pair down.

Connor heard some auditable scratching over the line.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm cleaning my sink" she picked up the phone to show him the sudsy sink, making a face at the camera.
"Ava I don't think the burglar touched your sink" he chuckled slightly.
"I don't know, I didn't think people robbed houses anymore, yet here we are" she sighed. Taking off her rubber gloves.
"You want a house tour?" She asked.
"I think I got a pretty clear idea of things from the cleaning spree"
"Shhh, you haven't seen all my decor" she said, holding the camera high in the air.

Ava showed Connor around the apartment in detail, even stopping to show him an Air
conditioning unit, claiming she'd never need it.
"Wait till you see how warm it is in the summer" he warned her.
Ava lay back on her bed, rolling onto her side the same way Connor was.
"They gave me the day off work and offered to find me a new apartment. I said there was no need"
"Are you in work tomorrow?" She asked.
"No" he lied, knowing he was due in at 2pm.
"Well I should still let you get some rest, it's nearly two am for you" she rubbed her eye.
"The cleaning pretty much tried me out"
"Thank you for staying up with me" she smiled, thinking about how sweet he looked with his bed head.
"Anytime Aves"
"Goodnight Connor"
