It'd been a tough month for Nick.He didn't have to say it, Charlie could tell just from the way he held himself during their facetime calls. Of course he was happy and engaged while talking to Charlie, but there was a slump in his shoulders and bags under his eyes.
Charlie had tried to ask him a few times what was wrong, but he always smiled and brushed it off. It made Charlie feel bad that Nick wouldn't talk to him, and that's what he told him. Nick immediately caved.
"I'm just stressed, Char," Nick had said. " My schoolwork is piling up, I don't think I'm studying what I'm supposed to be, my roommates don't clean up after themselves very well, there's a guy on the rugby team who has a problem with my sexuality...it's just a lot of little things, but they add up."
" My poor baby," Charlie had responded. He normally would have been teasing about it, but he'd meant it that time. He ached, wanting nothing more than to be in bed next to Nick and scoop him up in a hug and let him recharge.
" I miss you, too, of course," Nick laughed a little sadly. " Wish you were here with me. Want to be held."
Charlie's chest had ached even more at the admission, and he'd made up his mind.
He bought a ticket to Leeds for Friday afternoon, using money his dad had given him when he'd asked and decided to leave right after school got out. His mom wouldn't be happy when she found out, but he had a boyfriend to comfort.
He texted her when he was safely within the city limits of Leeds and turned his phone off immediately. He'd deal with it tomorrow.
He got off the train and flagged down a taxi to get dropped off at Nick's student housing. He'd been there twice already, once when he and Nick's mom helped Nick move in at the beginning of the school year, and once about a month and a half ago.
There was a chill in the air and he shivered as he ran up the steps to Nick's apartment that he shared with two other guys - also on the rugby team, to his understanding. He felt butterflies swarm his stomach in excitement at seeing his pretty boyfriend for the first time in almost two months and bit down on a smile, adjusting his bag and knocking on the door.
It took a few moments longer than he expected, but the door swung open and there he was. Tall and broad and mussed auburn hair.
Nick's eyes widened. "Char?" he breathed in disbelief. The smile Charlie had been fighting finally fought its way through and he grinned up at his boyfriend.
"Hi," he said. Nick quickly caught up with the program, leaning forward to sweep his boyfriend up into a hug that brought Charlie up to his tippy-toes.
"Hi," Nick answered, and his voice sounded watery next to Charlie's ear. Charlie squeezed his boyfriend back as tightly as he was capable of.
They stood there and held each other for a long moment before Nick pulled back, eyes shiny but a beaming smile on his face.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, pulling Charlie into the apartment and shutting the door behind them. Charlie shrugged, big smile still on his face.
"You said you missed me," he answered. Nick's tears finally fell and he slumped onto Charlie, hunching over to bury his face in Charlie's neck.
"Missed you so much," Nick said, voice muffled against Charlie's sweater. Charlie cooed, reaching up to run his fingers through Nick's hair.
