Work Text:
It was Saturday late morning and Charlie was scrolling Instagram in bed, sprawled on his stomach with a pillow beneath his chin. He couldn't keep from grinning madly to himself, admittedly creeping his own boyfriend's account. He was tagged in nearly every one of Nick's more recent posts. He lingered on the newest- a photo of the two of them from the previous weekend, dressed up in button downs and formal wear at one of the more expensive restaurants in town. They were clinking glasses and wearing matching smiles ear to ear. Nick had captioned the photo "my hot date x cheers to six months"

Charlie had already left a heart with the photo the day it had been posted, but if he could, he'd leave 20 more.

He breathed out as he beamed down at the post. Six months of Nick Nelson. He still couldn't believe it. Incredible.

Speaking of the devil, a little banner flagged from his messages and his phone dinged in his hand.

Nick: I'm here!

Charlie opened the private message string and typed a response.

Charlie: The door's unlocked. I'm in my room x

Nick: Will you come down a minute?

Charlie frowned. He was quite comfortable in his current position, thank you very much. It was a chilly day for the season and the thought of leaving the blankets was less appealing than Nick simply joining him in them instead.

Charlie: Just come up. I'm cozy ❤️

Nick's typing ellipse appeared after another few seconds.

Nick: I can't. I've got something to show you first

Charlie groaned dramatically. So much for staying in bed. He set his phone down huffily before rolling onto his feet. Whatever Nick had to show him had better be good for the effort. At least his curiosity had been peaked.

He trudged down the stairs and cracked open the door, finding Nick on his stoop in a pair of jeans and his tan bomber jacket, back to the house.

"Nick?"

The older boy jumped minutely before turning to face him.

"Charlie! Hi," Nick said, gripping the front of his coat. There was a bulge beneath the fabric there, something wiggling just above his breast bone.

"Nick, is -is that a cat?"

As if on cue, a fury orange head popped out just above the teeth of Nick's zipper. It let out a tiny high pitched mewl.

A soft moan caught in Nick's throat as he looked down at it with complete doe eyes. He stroked its head gently. "I found him in the bushes on the way over here and I didn't see his mum or siblings anywhere. He looked so helpless. I couldn't just leave him,"

"Oh my God. You've picked up a stray?" Charlie couldn't help but break into a smile. He didn't realize it was possible for his golden retriever of a boyfriend to get anymore wholesome, but here he was, watching his six-foot-something rugby king melt over a kitten barely the size of his hand.

"Well hurry up and come inside!" Charlie propped the door wider so Nick could enter, whole heartedly amused. The day had just gotten more interesting.

Nick paused, looking worried, "But won't your parents-?"

Charlie shook his head quickly. "They're not home. They're out of the town for the day visiting friends. It's just me and Tori,"

Nick looked relieved and followed him in, pulling the tiny cat out of his jacket fully. The little fluff ball really was adorable. It fit into the palm of Nick's hand, legs and tail hanging over the edges as it peered about. It looked alert and surprisingly full of fire for an abandoned kitten, though the state of its fur told otherwise. He was covered in mud and the tufts of fur around his ears were clumped with burrs.
