Work Text:
The video started on a dark-skinned teenage boy. A girl's voice from behind the camera asked, "Otis, who would win in a race, Nick or Charlie?"The boy, Otis, smirked. "Charlie."
It cut to another clip, this time of a taller boy. "Chris, who would win in a race, Nick or Charlie?"
Chris nodded to himself and said sagely, "Charlie."
Another clip, this time of a dark-skinned teenage girl, grinning at the camera as the voice said, "Tara, who would win a race, Nick or Charlie?"
She scoffed. "Oh, definitely Charlie."
A tall teenage girl with curly hair. "Elle, who would win in a race, Nick or Charlie?"
Elle tilted her head, a thoughtful look on her face before she said, "Charlie."
A tall, skinny Asian boy with a curly bob and a beanie was asked, "Tao, who's faster, Nick or Charlie?"
The boy, Tao, rolled his eyes. "The only person faster than the 'Rugby King' is Charlie."
Another boy, tall with glasses, was asked, "Sai, who's faster, Nick or Charlie?"
Sai sucked a breath through his teeth. "Oh. Um—probably Charlie?"
From off-screen, a teenage boy's voice could be heard saying, "This is getting ridiculous." The girl recording snickered before the video cut out.
Another boy with a sweet face. "Isaac! My guy! Who's faster: Nick or Charlie?"
Isaac grinned. "Definitely Charlie."
The same voice from before, the boy said, "Darcy, the name order is informing their opinion—"
A boy with blond hair and a posh air to him. "Harry, who's faster, Charlie or Nick?"
Harry snorted. "Charlie, obviously. The only one who can make a try against me."
The camera quickly panned to two boys standing off to the side, the taller redhead, with folded arms, saying, "Yeah, that's not true."
The video changed to a new clip, an older woman squinting at the phone. "Coach Singh! Who do you think would win in a race? Nick or Charlie?"
Coach Singh looked contemplative. "I think they've both got their own skills. Charlie I think is faster, though." A short noise erupted from off-screen, cut off before the audience could properly make sense of the sound.
Two boys showed up on-screen, one taller, broader, with reddish hair that seemingly changed color in the light; the other shorter, leaner, with dark curls and a giddy grin.
"Boys," the voice from behind the camera, likely Darcy, said, "it's time! For the record, I think Charlie's faster."
The taller boy's jaw dropped in mock outrage while the shorter boy burst into laughter. The taller shook his head. "I'm gonna win." This, presumably, was Nick.
"Sure you will," said the shorter. This was likely Charlie.
Next, the video cut to a clip of the two boys at their marks, ready to be given the signal to go. Coach Singh was there, leading the short race. Spectators dotted the track, all recognizable as those who'd been interviewed before.
"Get ready to be destroyed," Charlie said excitedly.
Nick rolled his eyes. "Alright, you know what? Maybe you're faster than me, but I'm just here—"
"Do you see that?" Charlie exclaimed, shouting over Nick's claims that he was just here to have fun. "Do you see how quickly he changed his tune? He was all 'I'm faster' and now it's 'you might be faster.' Come on, Nick!"
Nick shook his head with another roll of his eyes for good measure. "Whatever, I'm just saying—"
"No, no," Charlie argued, "you're gonna do this to the best of your ability and commit to your idiotic claims."
Nick threw his hands up in surrender, though seemingly was not too upset. Back on their marks, Nick glanced over and asked, "Kiss for good luck?"
Charlie gave him a look like he was downright insane. "No."
Coach Singh went to the space before them and set them off, both bursting into a sprint down the stretch of field.
The clip changed again, this time of the finish line, where Charlie clearly passed several seconds before Nick. The little assembled crowd cheered. Nick was smiling too wide to properly seem upset as he groaned.
"Fine," he said with a playful glare. "You're faster than me."
"Thank you," Charlie said, grinning.
Nick tugged Charlie to his chest. "Well then," he said with a sigh. "A victory kiss for you..." They met for a kiss, leaning into each other as they did. When they parted, Nick continued, "... and a consolatory kiss for me." And with that, they met for another kiss, though this one was more drawn out, Charlie leaning heavily into Nick's chest. Eventually, they parted. Nick looked thoughtful before he said, "You know, I don't really think I've lost this thing."
Charlie snorted. "Oh, my God, you sap !"
