Nick didn't think they'd ever played a game so well. The team was amazing, like a well-oiled machine against St. John's. They'd all sort of gone into it thinking there was no chance to win–it was St. John's, after all. The boys were realists; optimists, but realists. And reality said that this would be a truly crushing defeat.
But the Truham boys were playing with a sort of intensity that the other team lacked, the desire to have fun and try their best overtaking their want to win. They wanted to win, of course they did, but they knew they wouldn't.
And yet, with the clock ticking down to the final minute of the game, they were just one point behind. They were close, so close. The idea of beating St. John's was enough to propel them all into a new height of skill. Nick was easily able to instill them with drive, with excitement, with the spirit they needed to win. He was proud to call himself the team captain.
Nick took the time he had before the next play began to glance over at his boyfriend. Charlie was falling in line with the team, covered in dirt and sweat. Within the first few minutes, one of their players had gotten a sprain and they switched him out with Charlie. It made Nick anxious, knowing his boyfriend could get hurt, but it also was thrilling. Not only were they playing together, but Charlie was doing so well.
The game resumed and immediately Truham got the ball. Nick ran and tackled a player from the opposing team who'd been going after a Truham boy. The ball switched hands to another Truham player as Nick picked himself up and ran back into the fray. He saw the player run, flanked by several other boys in blue striped shirts, forming a wall as the player sprinted down the pitch. Nick saw a flash of skin, a strong calf, a head of dark, messy curls.
Charlie.
Nick jumped into action, colliding with a St. John's player who'd been running to try to get to the Truham players. They tumbled over, a stray elbow jabbing painfully into his ribs and punching the air from his lungs, but Nick immediately bounced back to his feet. Everyone was screaming as Charlie ran, other boys defending him from St. John's players as Charlie sprinted faster than anyone could keep up, faster than he'd ever gone before, all the way to the end of the pitch and passing over the line and–
The ball hit the ground.
The buzzer sounded.
Truham won.
Truham players erupted into shouts, glomming onto Charlie in celebration. Nick ran over to the group tackle, the cheering boys welcoming him into the group. Nick was laughing, giddy. His teammates separated the second they saw him, falling back to celebrate together and give Nick access to the middle. To Charlie.
Charlie was giggling, so clearly happy that he could barely contain it. He was the most beautiful thing in the world. Nick was so goddamn in love with him he felt like he could burst.
With that love spilling out of him, the excitement of their win, of Charlie's first ever successful try during a match, with him succeeding against St. John's of all teams, Nick laughed again with so much happiness. He picked Charlie up clean off his feet, spinning him around. Charlie yelped and giggled again, sounding like a melody in his ear. The crowd was thin, but the pitch was covered with two rugby teams. Nick didn't care.
He set Charlie back down on his feet. He took his face in his hands, both of them covered in dirt and sweat and grass stains and grime. Nick pressed their smiling lips together in a passionate kiss, immediately groaning and melting into his boyfriend. Charlie wrapped his arms around him, his hands fisting into Nick's soiled uniform shirt at his back. He separated from Nick long enough to giggle again, maybe trying to catch his breath, but Nick was too desperate to stay away. He kissed him again, grinning still but determined. They kissed as the team cheered, as they hollered and teased. He ran his hands through Charlie's sweaty curls, over his shoulders and back. He was so in love with him that he could barely take it.
"You're amazing," Nick said between kisses. Charlie giggled again. Nick leaned back to look at him, his red lips and kiss-drunk eyes, his bright smile and sweaty skin, his angular cheekbones. This beautiful boy, who was all Nick's. This beautiful boy, who won them the game against St. John's. Nick laughed, giddy. "You're amazing!" He said it again, louder, shouted it between them.
Charlie's grin was almost too big for his face. He threw himself at Nick, who caught him around the waist and spun them around again, just because he could. He sighed as he held Charlie, who was still laughing softly, adorable. "I love you so, so much," he said.
He could feel Charlie's smile against his neck. "I love you, too. So, so much."
Nick set Charlie back down and kissed him again. He was content to kiss him here, forever, but was interrupted by a shout, "Alright!"
He looked up, eyebrows raised as Otis rolled his eyes, fond. "We want to celebrate with him, too!"
Nick playfully glared at him. "You cannot kiss my boyfriend."
Otis made a face. "Piss off, mate."
Charlie laughed again and gestured for Otis to come over. The team flocked back around them, pressing them into another tackling hug.
"We won against St. John's," Nick said in shock. It really didn't feel real. It felt impossible. But, "We won against St. John's." Louder, he shouted, "We won against St. John's!"
The team cheered with him, yelping all around them. Charlie had the biggest grin on his face. Nick kissed him again, because he could. Because he loved Charlie, and Charlie loved him. They celebrated that everyday. Nick was always proud to be Charlie Spring's boyfriend, he was always proud to say that Charlie was his and he was Charlie's. He hoped every person from St. John's knew it now, too.
