Work Text:
It had been two months of sitting next to Nick Nelson in form, and Charlie Spring was well and truly done for. Leading to them hitting it off and becoming best friends ridiculously quickly, their brief 'hi's in the corridor had turned into laughing together hysterically during form and visits to each other's houses after school, snowball fights and Mario kart tournaments on the weekends. Charlie had even joined the rugby team and Nick had been apparently impressed by his progress - Charlie remembered when he'd actually scored a try when Nick was actually tackling him, and Nick had looked up at him with a look of sincere awe and disbelief that had crumbled any resolve Charlie had to protect his heart.

It was safe to say that Nick had become possibly the brightest light in Charlie's life at the moment, and he looked forward to every moment with him. He frequently thought about his birthday party at the bowling alley when Nick had spent all his money trying to win a stupid doughnut plushie from the grabber machine for him, and the soft orange light illuminating Nick's adorable concentration face. He'd felt incredibly tempted to confess his feelings there and then, but something in his brain stopped him even though he could have sworn he noticed Nick's eyes flicker down to his lips a few times. When he told Tao this, he'd scoffed and told Charlie it must have just been the lighting. That was also the night Nick had tentatively presented him with a framed photo of them both with Nellie during a snow day that he'd decorated himself, and it had firmly cemented Nick into his heart in that one singular moment. To put it simply, he was fucked, and very nearly completely in love with a straight boy.

All of this had led up to one of the worst yet best days of his life so far. Ben had cornered him in a corridor after two months of Charlie ignoring his messages, and forced rough painful kisses on him, ignoring when he'd cried or told him to stop. He'd resigned himself to what was going to happen when Nick had appeared from nowhere and pulled him off of Charlie, a look of disgust that looked so wrong on Nick's usually kind face. They'd talked briefly before about Ben and how he'd treated Charlie when Nick had helped him through a panic attack one night, and Charlie had shown him a few of the incessant messages that Ben was sending without going into too much detail.

Nick sat down in the corridor with him after Ben had stormed off red faced, and he'd explained that the reason he'd found them was that he recognised the face Charlie pulled as 'the Ben face' and got concerned when he entered a different building rather than leaving for home, so he followed to make sure everything was ok. After Charlie had calmed down Nick helped him up, and he'd noticed that Nick blushed when their hands touched.

They weren't seeing each other after school that day, and Nick's mum was picking him up. As they lived in opposite directions they split up at the gate and Charlie had messaged Nick to say a simple thank you. They usually messaged about funny things, swapping gifs or memes, but after today Charlie felt a shift towards something else, something more serious. They spent the evening talking about what had happened, the texts, and the threats that Charlie had received from Ben - no details spared, and Nick had vowed to kick Ben's ass if he even came near Charlie again which had made him laugh out loud.
