Summary:

The one where Charlie finds out Nick told his mates that they are dating, but that makes no sense because they have never even met... but then they do.
Notes:

yes, i am quite aware i've written way too many fake dating (this doesn't even apply all that much to fake dating tho, let's be honest) but i cannot help if this is literally my favorite trope ever and i like exploring different scenarios. i won't say this will be my last one, so i hope you're not tired of them yet 😌

thanks carm once again for betaing and carolis for all the help you gave me when i was writing. love you two 🩷

also yeah, i know valentine's day has passed already (i swear i tried to write it fast enough to post it during that week but alas) but i didn't want to waste the vday party idea so, that's what's happening lmao

Work Text:
Charlie blinked, feeling as if he was in a fever dream. Or even lucid dreaming. This whole situation made no fucking sense and yet, it looked acutely like reality.

You see, Charlie was having an awful day and it seemed to only be getting worse by the minute.

For starters, he woke up on time thanks to his alarm, but then he snoozed it a few too many times and almost showed up late for his first lecture of the day. He managed to get there with half a minute to spare though, so he thought the crisis had been averted.

Then, while he was out for lunch with his friends, his go-to meal wasn't available. And it threw him off in such a way that he ended up only eating chips. This small hiccup on his still somewhat rocky recovery from his eating disorder had been so unexpected that it worsened his already terrible mood.

But then during his last lecture of the day, this guy he'd been eyeing for weeks and who kept giving him mixed signals had dropped the B bomb and Charlie had not taken the disappointment very well. He'd really thought the flirty banter he'd had going on with the guy was going somewhere but alas, as Charlie's luck would have it, the boy seemed to already be in a committed relationship.

And now, just as he'd thought he was gonna have a relaxing end of the day, sitting in his favourite Café near campus and enjoying a much deserved caramel latte after freezing his balls off on the way there, he'd been hit with a surprise guest at his table.

The guy – an admittedly fit one that looked rather familiar with his blonde hair and blue eyes, but who was definitely not Charlie's type – had pulled the chair in front of Charlie, flipped it backwards in one swift move, making himself comfortable with both arms resting on the back on the chair and grinning cheekily at Charlie.

Charlie looked around, wondering if anyone had lost a friend. Or a puppy; he definitely looked like an overeager puppy with the way he was smiling.

"So you're the boyfriend then, aren't you?" Blonde Lad asked, and Charlie frowned, even more confused.

"Excuse me?"

"The boyfriend," he repeated, his smile growing in a self-pleased way as if he'd just discovered something very important.

"I honestly have no idea what you're talking about," Charlie cocked his head to the side, brows furrowed as his confusion turned to exasperation. "I don't have a boyfriend."

"Yeah, sure," Blonde Lad winked pointedly, and Charlie had to restrain himself to not roll his eyes. "It's chill, mate. He told us you guys are still keeping it low key, so there's no need to hide."

At that, Charlie couldn't help raising a brow, a tired sigh leaving his lips. Of course today of all days someone would try to scare him away from sitting in his favourite Café, drinking this favourite drink, while he was just trying to study in peace by saying some absurd lie.
