Summary:
Tao was still iffy with Nick. He had proven himself to be a loyal friend to Charlie, but Tao was pessimistic as always and constantly scared something would go wrong. So when Nick and Charlie almost immediately offered to share the bed next to the window, he was sure it was a recipe for disaster.
(canon divergence: nick and charlie share a bed in paris. tao finds out about them.)
Notes:so apparently it's been a minute since i last wrote a heartstopper fic. but hi! i'm still here! and im not going anywhere!
i have had this half-written in my drafts for 2 years and im finally posting it lmao 😭

(See the end of the work for more notes.)Work Text:
"Are you sure about this?"Tao was still iffy with Nick. He had proven himself to be a loyal friend to Charlie, but Tao was pessimistic as always and constantly scared something would go wrong. So when Nick and Charlie almost immediately offered to share the bed next to the window, he was sure it was a recipe for disaster.
"Relax, Tao. I'm fine, I promise. We've been friends for half a year!"
Tao sat next to Charlie on the bed. He eyed him suspiciously and pat him on the shoulder, "Yeah, but it's obvious you're still head-over-heels in love with him. Just standing next to girls I like makes me feel like I'm being electrocuted," he laughed.
Charlie paused, trying to sputter out some sort of sentence, but ultimately failed miserably.
"I'm just trying to look out for you," Tao said softly. "I know you really like him, and he seems like a nice guy, but...y'know."
"I know, and I love you for that, but really...Nick and I, we—" Charlie pressed his lips together in a flat line and trailed off.
"It's your funeral."
"I am aware."
Just in the nick of time, Tara and Darcy knocked loudly on the door. Aled sat up from his spot on the other bed, taking his earbuds out and rushing to let the girls in.
Tao looked over at Charlie one last time before being dragged away by Darcy, muttering a quiet "don't say I didn't warn you," then promptly getting tongue-tied the moment he saw Elle.
Tao tried his best to sleep.
Aled was snoring in his ear just loud enough to annoy the hell out of him. Not only that, but he could hear Nick and Charlie giggling and whispering to each other like gossiping tweens the entire night.
Well, maybe not the entire night, but at least until Tao (finally) fell asleep. It was almost sickening how cute and cringe the two boys were. Even so, the last thing Tao expected when he woke up was the sight of said boys entangled together in a mess of hair and limbs.
He had to blink a couple of times. Surely, this was a dream. Charles Francis Spring and Nicholas Middle Name Nelson were not cuddling right before his very eyes.
You know what? It's fine. It's fine! He and Elle, maybe even Aled, had ended up a bit too close quite a couple of times during late film nights. It wasn't that weird.
But Nick Nelson wasn't Aled, or Elle, or even Tao. He was Nick Nelson, and Tao was confused as shit.
A loud, rhythmic knock finally echoed through the hotel room, waking Aled, but not the others. Aled got up to say good morning to whoever was at the door, but Tao couldn't care less about who was there. He was frozen in place, watching as Charlie finally shuffled and blinked his eyes open.
