Nina was barely aware of the people around her when the barista called her name. She easily went up and the second her cup was in her hand, she heard off to her side, "Excuse me?"

Nina glanced over, a bit surprised. There were two boys; one, the boy who'd spoken, was wearing a pleasant smile. He had wild dark curls, high cheekbones that made Nina a bit jealous, and bright blue eyes. The boy beside him was clearly embarrassed, his freckled cheeks flushed pink. He had fairer skin than the other boy, was a lot more muscular, and had neat ginger hair swept to the side.

"I'm so sorry to bother you," the dark-haired boy continued with a sheepish smile, "but did that barista over there write your name on your cup?"

Nina glanced over where he'd pointed to the blonde girl behind the counter. "Um, yeah?"

The boy's grin widened, just slightly. "Would you mind turning your cup so we can see the way she wrote it, please?"

Shocked more than anything, Nina did as she was asked. Both boys looked, and both had very different reactions; the dark-haired boy looked almost gleeful, while the other looked vaguely pained.

"Huh," the boy said as he continued to study the name scrawled across her cup. "Interesting. See, Nick, I thought you'd said she dotted all her 'I's with a heart, but here we are, with an 'I' she wrote, very much not dotted with a heart."

Oh, no. Nina watched the ginger boy–Nick–cringe. "Okay, so maybe she doesn't do that for everyone, but that doesn't mean she's flirting with me."

The other boy raised his eyebrows at his friend like he was calculating the man's brain capacity. "Nick, she was flirting with you. And you, idiot lad, you were flirting back."

"I was not," Nick said indignantly.

"'Oh, Nicky, how nice to see you!'" The boy quoted in an exaggerated tone, something like a teasing grin on his face. "'I know exactly what you're getting, don't I?' 'Oh, well you're so great at your job if you just know my order, Kate.' 'You're so sweet, Nicky, my absolute favourite, always makes my day to see you come in.'"

Nina cringed; that definitely did sound like flirting. And judging by the way Nick blushed, it didn't seem like his friend misquoted anything.

"That's just being friendly!" Nick argued. Nina could have face-palmed right there. She almost did, but she didn't want to draw attention to herself and make them stop, because now she was invested.

The other boy scoffed with an incredulous smile. "Nick, you know her name! She doesn't even wear a name tag."

Nina briefly went over what she'd heard and–yes, the boy had mentioned her name. Kate.

"She told me her name, what's the big deal?"

"Nick, baristas don't just tell you their name for no reason," the boy laughingly pointed out, which was fair. "And why is she calling you 'Nicky'? I don't even call you that; as far as I know, the only person who calls you that is your mum."

Nick cringed again. "She was being friendly!"

"Yeah, friendly," his friend said with an obvious note of disbelief in his voice. "The next thing you'll say is that she's written her phone number on your cup!"
