Work Text:

Dawn had seemingly come earlier today than days of the past. The beams of sunlight caressed the tops of the white, luscious clouds floating in the sky, filtering their way through Nick and Charlie's bedroom window. As it shifted across the room, the sunlight warmed up the legs entangled in the bedsheets, once cold during the night. The rays climbed up the sheets, crawling towards Nick's face. Once they reached his jawline, the light began to dance on his unshaven stubble, reflecting the different shades of blonde. It crept up to his cheeks and stayed there for a while, brushing across the tip of his nose as well.

From the hallway, Charlie peeked through the door and smiled at the angelic complexion of his boyfriend. He began to rub the dried tears off of his cheek with the back of his sleeve whilst he held a cup of coffee in the other, yet new tears began forming in his eyes. Even looking at his beautiful boyfriend, Charlie felt a certain sadness within him that he couldn't quite explain. He just knew that it was going to be a rough day.

As he walked over to the bed, Charlie felt the new onset of tears trail down his face, and he didn't even bother wiping them away. He shakily put down his mug of coffee on the bedside table, which let him wrap both arms around his torso. He stood in that comforting stance for a bit, just looking at Nick sleep peacefully in the sunlight. But then an overwhelming storm of sadness and anxiety seemed to swirl up inside of him, causing more tears to slip out and fall against his cheeks. Lifting his hands to cover his eyes, a few tears trickled down the curvature of his knuckles. He was sobbing at this point, though he didn't know why. He knew that some days were like this, but why did it have to be today? His thoughts began to spiral slightly, his internal voices shaming him and declaring him as weak. I'm not weak, I'm not weak, he told himself, trying his best to combat the untruthful voices that were trying to tempt him to give in to their lies.

"Char?"

It was at that time that the voices stopped for a brief moment, letting Charlie collect himself a bit. He peeked through the gaps in his fingers to see his boyfriend rub the sleepiness out of his eyes, the innocent and heavenly complexion now replaced with a confused expression exemplified by the furrow in his brows.

"Charlie?" he opened his eyes, undoubtedly becoming more concerned with now seeing the state Charlie was in.

Still crying, Charlie tried to regulate his breathing by counting the breaths in and out, holding onto them in between. Each exhale was shaky, but he was finding a rhythm. He didn't feel embarrassed for Nick to see him like this, as this wasn't the first time Nick woke up to the sound of him crying, but something within Charlie felt bad. He felt as if he had to put on a brave face, even for Nick, who had seen him at his worst.

"Nick–"

"Hey, come here," he gestured his hand toward the empty space on the bed, ushering Charlie to come and lay with him.

Charlie wiped his eyes and cheeks again using the back of his sleeve, which was now incredibly damp. He crawled over to the little nook Nick had created for him, settling in and curling up to Nick's side. He looked up to face Nick with his tearful eyes, to which Nick responded by brushing away the rest of the tears. Charlie sniffled, closing his eyes as he felt the gentle touch of his boyfriend caressing his skin. Nick brought his hands down to Charlie's jaw, where he just gently held his boyfriend's face for a bit, combing through his soft curls every now and then.

Charlie slowly slid through Nick's hands, letting his face fall onto his boyfriend's chest. He could, all of a sudden, hear the strong beating of Nick's heart– a rhythm that he could find comfort in. With one hand on his stomach, Nick brought his other hand up to Charlie's shoulders, rubbing them tenderly.

"Do you want to talk about it?" He whispered, his voice breathy and gentle.

"Mm," Charlie grunted, and Nick instantly knew what to do. Charlie wasn't going to tell him what was wrong, but Nick knew that some days Charlie just felt like this. And that was okay with him.

"You know," he whispered as he brought his hand up to Charlie's hair, entangling his fingers through the soft curls, "today is a beautiful day." Charlie grunted again, this time with an agreeing tone. "And you know what?" he continued, "it reminds me of that day we met," he chuckled softly, reminiscing the time they had first laid eyes on each other. "You know, I've always told you how I knew from the start we were going to be close, but I don't think I've ever told you just how much I think of that day." He looked out to the window, where the sun still shone brightly in the sky, hovering over the bright white clouds. He began to twirl Charlie's hair around his finger, playing with the waves and curls.

"That memory is like a golden memory to me," he continued, "I can't really explain it." Looking down at his boyfriend resting on his torso, he was filled with a certain sense of fondness. "But, anyway, what I'm trying to get at here, Char, is that life is filled with those golden memories. Memories of me and you. How special is that? We have created so many memories together in this universe where we could've ended up in any way. Yet the universe was kind enough to let us be together– I think that's pretty special." He paused, trying to collect his thoughts and pick out the right words to say.

"I'm just thankful that we found trust in each other. I trust you with my whole heart, Char, and I know you trust me. Thank you for that. And I know you're feeling very shitty– if that's even a close enough word to describe what you're feeling right now– but just know that I'm here for you, forever and always. And I know that right now this probably isn't helpful to hear but I just want you to know how much I love you. I love you, Charlie Spring, and I want to make so many more golden memories with you. For now, I just want you to know that there's hope. It's been raining for so long, Char, I know it has been. But here comes the sun." He turned back to the window, where Charlie's eyes followed. Nick held onto Charlie as they embraced the warmth of the sun on their skin, gently squeezing and rocking him.

"Thank you," Charlie whispered, his voice barely audible to Nick. "I needed that." He turned around to face his boyfriend, whose eyes were filled with adoration. "Thank you." He brought his still slightly shaky hands up to Nick's face, holding him as their lips met.

After a few kisses, Charlie started softly laughing, causing Nick to be confused.

"Sorry-" he said in between breaths, "your stubble." This made Nick laugh, which made Charlie laugh a little more. They were able to find their breathing pattern once again and resumed the kissing.

"I love you so fucking much," Charlie whispered against Nick's ear, right before he pulled his boyfriend in for a hug. "I can't wait to make so many more golden memories with you, too."
