Nick heard it the second he ran out into the field.Nick Nelson! Rugby King! Nick Nelson! Rugby King!
It was a three-syllable chant, emanating from maybe half the crowd at this point, but rapidly growing. Nick groaned. He thought he'd left that blasted nickname behind.
His teammates were giving him weird looks, which was fair, because Nick was not the rugby king, and definitely not here. And yet, the crowd was chanting his name, chanting that dumb nickname he'd always scoffed at. But that means...
He scanned the crowd, hoping. Someone had to be here. No one at uni knew his secondary school moniker, there was no way any of them would even hear it.
Someone from Truham had to be here.
Nick looked out at the sea of faces, all of them chanting that stupid nickname. He caught sight of a banner. It read the same thing: Nick Nelson, Rugby King. The 'I' in 'King' was dotted with a crown.
"I'd make a giant banner," Charlie had told him one day as a joke, knowing it'd make Nick roll his eyes and kiss him to shut him up. "I'd put a crown over the 'I' so everyone knows you're the king of rugby."
Nick immediately took off running. The crowd was certainly confused, and his teammates were calling for him, but Nick didn't stop. He saw his friends' faces materialize in the crowd, smiling and chanting, his dicks of friends, who he loved so damn much.
And Charlie.
Nick barreled right into him, his beautiful boyfriend, the love of his life. He easily scooped him off his feet, delighting in Charlie's little yelp and protests as he laughed. Nick spun them around, overcome with sheer delight.
"You're here!" He called. He set Charlie down on his feet, their grins matching, almost too wide for their faces.
Nick hadn't seen Charlie since winter break. He'd been so caught up in rugby practice with the season coming up, and his class workload was a bit more intense. Plus, with Charlie studying his A Levels, neither of them could make the time to travel to the other.
Charlie smiled up at him, soft and adoring. Nick didn't know what his face was doing right now, but based on the annoyed groan from Tao, it was probably very loving.
"You didn't really think I'd miss your first uni game, did you?" Charlie asked.
And, really, Nick should've known Charlie would be here for that. He shouldn't have underestimated his boyfriend, his everything, who loved him so deeply. Nick loved Charlie, and he knew him like the back of his hand. Charlie would always be here.
Nick couldn't take the swell of love in his chest. He pressed forward and kissed Charlie, right in front of the cheering crowd and his own rugby team along with their opponents. Nick was entirely aware he was holding up the start of the match, so he kept it quick. Charlie grinned at him when they separated.
"Go," He said with a gentle shove at his chest.
"I love you," Nick told him.
Charlie laughed and pushed him towards the pitch. "I love you, too, now go !"
