The attack from a couple of nights ago shook me up, and to make it worse, the police claimed that they never received a call or found evidence besides my broken window and busted doors. Unfortunately, I would have to agree with Kai. The police were the last people on this planet who could do their jobs correctly—no wonder those clown attacks had become so common. I haven't stepped foot back into my house ever since. I wouldn't either. Not until the cops figured something out or let a SWAT team guard me.

Amid my fear of my house, Kai welcomed me with open arms into his; he was a different person within his walls. We watched movies together while he made us food and discussed foreign policy, which threw me off because he was deeply passionate about it. Our views were unaligned regarding politics, but he stopped bringing it up once he realized I was concerned. I figured the therapy was kicking in, and he realized how stupid he sounded. Besides the propaganda, he had proven that he wanted to change. The only thing I didn't like about living with him were the members of his organization and publicity team.

Kai continued to run for the councilman's seat, but his team members were always around. The group was secretive about everything. I understood it's very political stuff, and maybe they thought I wouldn't get some of it, but they didn't have to lock themselves in the basement each time they needed to speak with him. Not to mention, they all weren't too fond of me, especially this one woman, Meadow. When I first met her, she had a broken nose, a wrapped-up head, and an attitude, and she glared at me like I had done it, along with her also injured husband, Harrison, who I didn't think liked her. Kai told me they had gotten robbed and beaten before meeting me, so now they're mad at the world, but they didn't have to stare me down. The others didn't seem to hate me, but we rarely spoke, and they acted like they'd get in trouble if they talked to me. I tried my hardest to ignore them, as Kai suggested. But it seemed difficult to ignore because they acted like a cult.

Kai was adamant about keeping the basement door locked whenever they had meetings. Someone must've forgotten as I slowly crept down the steps, attempting not to make a sound. Everyone stood around while Kai lectured them, but the conversation didn't seem political. Their conversation ended shortly after I tumbled to the bottom of the stairwell. Everyone's cold eyes stared at me as I dusted myself off and pretended I was confused, except for Kai, who rushed over.

"Are you alright? Did you hit your head," he questioned.

"No, I'm fine, Kai. I'm sorry to interrupt, but the door was unlocked, so I wanted to ask if anyone wanted snacks. I didn't mean to interrupt, though. I'm sorry if I did," I announced.

"No. Do. Not. Apologize. It's not your fault. It's whoever entered that door last fault, and they'll have to answer to it. Everyone knows to lock it," Kai interrupted.

The others looked worried as Kai gave them a stern look- some even seemed scared. I was scared for them. He acted how he used to before the clowns attacked my house. It slightly made me uncomfortable to even be around him like this. He had done so well so far, and I didn't want one mishap to bring him back to that dark place. Politics shouldn't cause this much anguish for someone who isn't even inside the doors of the City Council yet.

"Hey, no! You're backtracking. You're acting like Kamikaze again, not Kai. Come back to me," I advised.

Kai's look softened as he nodded at me.

"You're right. I'm sorry, Y/n," he replied.

The others shared looks of astonishment as they watched our interaction. Winter was the most amazed of them all. Had Kai never been this calm before? I figured the reason he went ballistic was because of a traumatic childhood event, but the fact that she'd never seen her brother be a reasonable person concerned me a bit because she would've been around to know.
