"Kai, drop the gun," I begged the agitated man, "It's not too late to turn back. Stop this madness before it restarts..."
His gaze was enough to tell me to shut up. The weapon had not been lowered, and Kai continued to aim at the bandaged man in front of him; he had been a free man for only a month- and here is what he chose to do. It wasn't like the both of us were on the most wanted list after busting him out of prison. Breaking him out was a challenge, but it seemed like he'd prefer to get caught again based on his recklessness, or at least that's what he's making me think. He wasn't keeping a low profile by threatening one of his fellow ex-council members with a gun.
"Y/n," he yelled, "I told you to stay in the car. I don't need your help."
No matter how much he told himself, Kai knew that was a lie as the cult would have never gotten this far, let alone reached its peak, if it weren't for me. He was the charismatic face- I was the quiet mastermind, secretly his right hand making sure that everything worked perfectly and that no one ever got caught. Disguised as his out-of-touch girlfriend who didn't know that the sky was blue, I would pretend to be ignorant of everything. For my safety, that was what Kai and I agreed on. It worked well enough that the cops let me off completely, stating that I was guilty of no crime and a victim of circumstance when I was the one who made sure all of his plans were correctly orchestrated. The other members didn't have a clue either.
To say I wasn't ashamed was a bald-faced lie. I thought about the many lost lives every day, people who didn't do anything but fall in the eyes of Kai. I knew from the day I met him there was something not right in his head, but I couldn't think straight when he looked at me. I promised him I'd be by his side forever, no matter what because I loved him. Love. That was the cause of my downward spiral from the moment I met him- even when he said shit that made me sick to my stomach. I would force myself to bear with him for the sake of love. When he was locked up, I considered going ghost to free myself from the curse, but when I answered his phone call from the prison. I was possessed all over again. The sound of his desperate voice saying that he'd missed me and wished to be in my arms again was enough for me to devise a plan to get him out in under a week. Love earned me my rightfully deserved picture on the government's most-wanted list next to the love of my life.
"If you don't have any ideas, Y/n, take your ass to the fucking car," Kai insisted.
"Kai, we can't keep doing this forever," I complained, "We've gotta get out of here. This revenge plot is dumb, and you're wasting our time to leave. Let's go!"
"Do not bitch out now," he demanded, "It was your plans that got us into this situation. No matter what happens, you can get us out, so what if the cops bust through that door any second now- you can get us out of here."
"It's not worth the risk- my life's on the line too now," I argued, "Just take whatever cash he has and come on."
"I-I agree with the lady," the hostage commented.
Kai clicked the safety off of the weapon.
"Shut the fuck up before I shoot you," Kai warned him.
"My bad," the man cried, "Carry on."
"Y/n, we were so close to having it all," Kai continued, "It was all in the palm of our hands- we can get there again- you just have to trust me."
"I can't because it's not the same," I fussed, "They all know our names and our faces; nothing we say or do can save us anymore. Look, there's a plane to Mexico that leaves in 1 hour- if we leave now, we'll get there right before it boards. I've already booked the tickets, got fake passports, and emptied my savings account. There's no telling the outcome this time- we're defeated. We need to go."
"No," Kai shouted, "I will not be defeated."
"Babe, you were defeated the day you coerced Ally to join the cult," I admitted.
He clenched his jaw as he lowered the gun from the man's head.
"That was the one idea you didn't have," he chuckled.
"And I told you from the start that I didn't trust her," I reminded, "But just like now, you knew what you were doing, and you made the choice yourself."
Kai looked up at me.
"I hate to admit it, but I should've listened," he sighed, "I messed up."
"But we have a shot to escape," I continued, "It's up to you what you want to do."
He put the gun on safety again and placed it into my palm.
"You haven't told me wrong yet, so it's your call," he responded, "I believe in you."
"I won't let you down," I promised.
Kai threw his hands in the air and backed away from me, smiling as he watched me take the safety off the gun and place it between the councilman's eyebrows.
"If you've got a family you want to live to see, I suggest you tell me where you keep all your cash," I threatened.
"My wallet's in my pocket, and there's a safe in that cupboard over there," the man cried.
Kai rushed over to the cupboard and found the safe.
"What's the code," he asked.
"0704," he cried.
"How patriotic," I scoffed, "Kai, run his wallet."
Kai swiped the money from the safe and headed over to the man, rummaging through his pockets and snatching every bill out of his wallet.
"What now," Kai asked.
"We're heading to the airport," I answered, "We've got a change of clothes in the trunk, and I've got some make-up in there so we can change how faces around a bit."
"You're always one step ahead," Kai complimented, "That's why I love you."
"Can you let me go now," the hostage asked.
"Shut up, and don't forget I broke him out of prison once- if you say anything to cops, I'm coming back for your ass," I threatened.
"That's my girl!"
