Maintaining my attendance for these meetings had become more complicated by the day. Getting enough sleep was seldom for me over the past few months, so getting up and ready was now a battle. It's even harder when you're responsible for another member's presence and participation. Everyone gathered in the basement and listened to Kai's rant for the week. This week would be hectic, so this was a critical discussion for him, and the last thing he needed was an interruption.
I sat in a chair, rocking my little one in my arms, trying to calm him down before he exploded into tears. Luck wasn't on my side as Kai halted and exhaled as he turned to look at us. Everyone brought their attention over in our direction as I tried to calm my child even more. This was the third time the child's outbursts had interrupted the meeting; Kai let it go the other two times, but now he needed to handle it. He approached me and the baby with a blank stare.
"Hand him over," Kai instructed.
I handed him the still-crying child. Kai held it to his face and stared at the baby boy until the child stopped. His whines turned into giggles as soon as he saw Kai. Powerful was an understatement for the man because I could never get my child to calm down like Kai could. While I spent every waking moment by my child's side, they shared a bond that no one could break, and the little one brought out a side of Kai that you'd have to see to believe.
"Now! Why is my handsome boy unhappy? Did mommy make you mad again," he cooed.
Kai rocked our son in his arms as he spoke to him in a baby voice. I tried not to giggle as our son grabbed his father's face. Kai pretended to munch on his miniature hands as he played with his spawn. Fatherhood changes people. Even the cult leader before me became an entirely new person when I announced I was pregnant, and once our little Kaiser was born, so was Kai's soft side.
"Hungry for world domination! Just like his father! Who's a strong little heir? You're a strong little heir," Kai cooed.
The rest of the members looked like they'd witnessed something they were never supposed to. Kai was an absolute demon to the rest of the world, but Kaiser was nothing like the scum he perceived to be underneath him. Kaiser was his successor and the reason his world spun. As he noticed everyone else watching, Kai's smile dropped, and he returned to his usual tyrant behavior while deepening his voice.
"You all need to take notes! This is the dedication you all need to have if you want us to succeed! Little Kaiser is making you all look like the bitches you are," Kai exclaimed.
I stood up and grabbed Kaiser from his father, resulting in a ruffled look from him. It was too early for him to be using our child as a model for destruction- this is why he was spoiled now. Plus, I was exhausted and wanted to put our child to bed and lie down.
"I'm taking him into the room to feed him, and then I'm putting him down for a nap," I stated.
The very thought of not being in the same room with our son sent Kai into hysteria. Being a father gave Kai more sense of responsibility, but it didn't stop his temper tantrums. He wreaked havoc even if I took Kaiser to the grocery store without him; he couldn't stand being away from our son, and I'd learned how to use it to my advantage.
"No, Y/n! Why can't you feed him in here," Kai whined.
"Kai, I'm not popping a titty out in front of all these people," I exclaimed.
Kai rolled his eyes and scoffed as he folded his arms.
"What happened to 'Free the Nipple,' huh? Now women have self-respect," he complained.
How Kai and I ended up together still confused me to this day, and how I fell in love with him was an even bigger haze because most of the stuff he says makes me want to kick him in the balls. Love truly did work in mysterious ways. I sucked my teeth before walking toward the room.
"No. No. No, wait! I'm sorry! Can you at least bring him back here when he's done eating," Kai pleaded.
"Will you watch him for me if I go to sleep," I questioned.
"Pfft. That's not the man's role. You're the caregiver," Kai snickered.
"Like I thought. We'll see you in a couple of hours. By the way, I'm locking the door," I declared.
"Okay. Okay. I'll let you off this meeting. Just bring Kaiser back beforehand," Kai agreed.
"We'll see you in a few," I announced.
"Wait- before you go," Kai exclaimed.
Kai walked over to us and leaned over Kaiser, kissing his nose before cooing again. Kai may have been a nuisance, but he made up for it by being a great dad... when he wasn't endorsing Jim Jones.
"Bye. Bye, Daddy's little successor," Kai cooed.
