An unnatural feeling appeared out of thin air, ruining my social life and friendships. Seth was my closest guy friend before everything changed. Now I wanted to curl into a ball in hide whenever he was around me. I'd asked my older sister and mother if they'd ever experienced something like this, and their response revealed what I was afraid of. I had my first crush on Seth Wosmer. Our friend Keely said she'd seen it coming from a mile away, but what scared me most was when she claimed Seth might've known. I refused to let him know or ruin our friendship.

Our teacher assigned us to be study partners as usual. We were both smart, so we knew the assignment would be a piece of cake, but I was uncertain since I couldn't think straight around him anymore. Things got more awkward when Seth asked me to meet at his house to review the assignment. I'd never turned down a study session with him, so I accepted his offer to make my odd behavior less obvious. Regret set in after realizing what I'd agreed to and the turmoil of how it could end.

Seth guided me to his dining room. He'd already started reading through textbooks; books spread across the table, some of their pages flipped open. Seth pulled out a chair, offering for me to sit. Thanking him with a nod, I hoped he didn't notice how shaky I was as I sat down. I couldn't even look at him too long without my heart flipping inside. He gave me a confused look as he watched me.

"Are you okay, Y/n? You know you've been acting odd lately?" Seth questioned.

I swallowed as I tried to fake a shocked expression.

"What? Yeah, I'm fine," I lied. "Why do you ask?"

Seth raised an eyebrow, and he took his seat next to me. He scooted his chair closer to me, making it harder to maintain my cool. Everything about him made me swoon from his warm brown eyes to his soft lips. I couldn't help but notice the way his brown curls bounced against his face whenever he moved. Details I'd never caught on to before stood out to me. I was too far gone.

"Well, you're more silent than usual," he acknowledged.

I gave a fake smile as I tried to create an excuse for my behavior change. My habit of never shutting up annoyed everyone, but Seth could never get enough. Around others, I tried to be as mute as a silent movie, but when I was around him, I could be myself. He would listen to me talk for hours and never interrupt. When I'd stop, he'd request I continue because he could tell it made me happy to talk my head off. My silence seemed to worry him, meaning I needed to say whatever.

"It's puberty! Everything is puberty," I fibbed. "According to my sister, periods are next. Then boobs. You know, hormones and we're getting older. And crushes on your best friends. And questioning your purpose in life. Yeah."

Seth went silent as he processed my tangent. I continued to fake a grin as I turned to look in the other direction while covering my mouth with my hand. My smile dropped once I knew he couldn't see my expression change. Embarrassment radiated through me as I questioned why I told on myself. Why did he make me so nervous?

"Well- um. Would you like any snacks?" he asked. "I told my mom to get a lot of milk and chocolate chip cookies since I know you like those so much. I remember you said they help you calm your nerves."

He was so sweet it made me want to yell. I could seldom remember my favorite ice cream flavor sometimes, yet he could remember minor details about my snack choices. I turned to look at him and he had that cute smile. Still hiding behind my hand, I nodded in response.

"Alright, I'll go get you some," Seth announced.

A couple of cookies would not be enough to calm my nerves. With the embarrassment I was enduring, I would need a pack to distract myself from the catastrophe of this study session.

"I need an entire pack," I assured.

"An entire pack," he repeated.

"Is that too much right now?" I asked.

"Oh no, my mom brought multiple. You're fine," Seth claimed. "It's just aren't you watching your calories?"

He could read me like one of our textbooks.

"Today's my cheat day." I lied.

"No, you said yesterday was your cheat day," he challenged. "You also said that the day before, and so forth."

He'd caught me red-handed as he folded his arms and waited for my response. I scooted my chair up to the table and grabbed a book to avoid explaining myself to him.

"So, you're just going to ignore me now?" Seth questioned.

"Maybe," I responded.

"That does it. My mom said I should just let it play out, but I'm not going to," he proclaimed. "You hardly want to talk to me, now you're lying in my face. What's going on between you and me, huh? "

"Air, oxygen, etc. There's a lot of invisible matters that flow in between," I replied.

"Not chemically, Y/n, emotionally," Seth asserted.

"That's not the type of science we're supposed to be studying right now. Now is it?" I challenged.

Seth threw his hands in the air and stood up from his chair.

"I'm done. Y/n tell me the truth or we can't be friends!" he exclaimed.

He could not be serious. I knew this session would have ups and downs, but almost losing our friendship was not on my docket.

"Hey, that's not fair. You know, sometimes you have to keep secrets for the sake of friendship," I stated.

"No. You don't," Seth ridiculed.

"Yes. you do," I countered.

Seth shook his head as he sat back down, glaring at me like he wanted to pull my seat from under me.

"Fine, I guess I'll tell you," I lied.

I covered my mouth with my hand and babbled nonsense.

"You know I couldn't hear that," Seth responded.

"Well, that's too bad, because I gave you your answer. Now, we're friends again." I stated. "Now, what about those cookies?"

I sighed as Seth stood up and went to the kitchen to get the snacks, returning with two cups of milk and a pack of cookies. I smiled at him as he placed the food on the table. He could have an attitude all he wanted, but little did he know, I had just saved our friendship. Seth sat down in the chair and scooted closer to me.

"Hey, just know that I only keep secrets from you for our sake," I informed.

"Sure. You could tell Keely that you liked me, but not me," Seth stated. "That girl talks more than you."

My mouth dropped as Seth chuckled and reached for a cookie.

"It looks like you need one of these," he teased.

He held the snack up to my face and I snatched it from his hand. The times for jokes were no more.

"Wait- so this entire time you knew," I interrogated.

"Keely told Phil as soon as you told her, and Phil knew I liked you, so he told me." Seth expressed. "I wasn't out acting weird about it, though. You could've just asked me."
