Everyone within these walls was in a fit of hysteria because of our new patient who would be arriving. We'd gotten plenty of serial killers to walk through those asylum doors, but none struck fear into our hearts like this man. Most of the staff at Briarcliff were women, so the thought of housing the prime suspect for Bloody Face, the notorious serial killer who mutilated women, was bloodcurdling at the least. To make it even more frightening, Sister Jude assigned me to help our new patient settle in. Sister Jude and Sister Mary Eunice needed to assist Dr. Arden and the Monsignor. They had no other choice but me.
The news reporters and their photographers had already arrived as they stood outside, waiting for their next scoop as the story they were waiting for pulled up with police escorts. The build-up was torturing me. Why couldn't she have gotten the Monsignor to handle this situation, not a sister? Faith and the male nurses would be the only thing I could count on to ensure my safety. My heart beat out of fear as the officers got out and opened the car door, revealing the man we'd all dreaded meeting. As the criminal exited the car, my heart beat for a different reason.
My thoughts wandered to a place that no sacred member should. It could only be the devil at work because this feeling was unbeknownst to me. He had to have committed those horrible acts. No man should have the power to make a sister have such thoughts of impurity. Perhaps those thoughts lured his victims to him. He was beautiful. When his eyes locked with mine, he made me feel a way that only the lord himself could cleanse. A bath of holy water wouldn't save me from this. He was a lost man who needed to be rescued from the shackles of evil, and he would be, but looking away was the only way to preserve my seat in Heaven while doing that.
The only words spoken to the man so far were the greeting he'd received at the front door while the officers informed me of his and what we'd need to look out for. His name was Kit Walker. The nurses were very brutal in handling Mr.Walker. Sister Jude would allow the nurses to be hostile toward patients, which raised many questions about her practices, but she was my senior, so my mouth stayed shut. The disgruntled grunts of the man were too much for me to handle, though. No matter if the man was a delinquent, he was still a child of God under the lord's eye, and harm would not be done to him under my surveillance.
"Don't you two think you're being too aggressive with him?" I questioned.
The two nurses shared a look before they snickered, shaking their heads as if there was no problem. Many of the staff didn't take too kindly of me because of the restriction my existence provoked. The patients were not supposed to be treated as lesser humans but as people who needed to regain Christ back into their lives. If you asked me, the staff and church members were who needed it most; Sister Mary Eunice and I were not only the two youngest of the monastery, but we were the only two who followed God's word.
"Enlighten me on what's so funny about such hostility," I proclaimed.
"I mean no disrespect, Sister Y/n, but if we weren't here to protect you right now, this man would claw your eyes out." One nurse spoke. "He deserves the same treatment those women got."
"I didn't do it!" Kit cried. "I swear you've got the wrong guy!"
Kit's outburst resulted in a gruesome reaction from the nurses as they pinned him against the wall and choked him, demanding that he doesn't speak until he's talked to. His eyes cried out for help, and letting a son of the lord suffer was against my values.
"Ephesians 4:31-32! Let all bitterness. And wrath. And anger. And clamor. And slander be put away from you, along with all malice!" I exclaimed. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
The two nurses looked at each other as if another language was spoken to them. These were the people who represented our space.
"It means that we forgive whatever crimes he has committed and treat him with kindness, no matter the harm he has caused," I explained. "We must not be vengeful or treat him with malice. After all, he will be punished when his day of judgment comes- if he doesn't give his life to the lord, that is. Now release him immediately!"
