The Treehouse- Adam Sheppard

This summer vacation was the most uneventful one I'd ever experienced. Thanks to my best friend getting back at a bully, I was alone and dreaded every second. Adam was more complicated to find than those green parrots we'd occasionally see around here. While those parrots continued to hang out in the tree near his front yard, Adam continued to hang out everywhere but his house. I was so happy to see Adam coming out of his shell again after the accident. He was meeting new friends, going out more, and even seeing Father Dan for therapy. But dammit, I missed the long-haired dork. He was my friend first, and I was sick of being a side character in this storyline. Fuck Johnny, Father Dan, and those dumb-ass birds. I was here first.

I hopped on my bike and rode to his neighborhood. Maybe today would be one of those rare occasions when he had time for our narrative. The brunette boy had just made a turn as I pulled down the end of his street. Immediately, I pedaled faster to catch him before he could go any further.

"Hey, Adam," I greeted.

The boy's eyes lit up upon seeing me, grinning as he took both hands off the handlebars and sat up straight. He always had to show off his tricks. I would have flatlined if I tried to imitate him.

"Hey, Y/n. Long time no see. Did you do something new with your hair? It looks nice," Adam responded.

"Thank you. Well, I got a new blow dryer. It doesn't dry out my coils like the last one. Plus, I started using this new curl cream, and it makes my curls pop- wait, you noticed," I exclaimed.

"Of course, why wouldn't I? Besides, I prefer when you put down the flatiron, but I wouldn't be the best person to ask about hair advice," he endorsed.

He put his hands on his head and fluffed his long curls. Contrary to what everyone else thought, I happened to love Adam's long hair. It made him look rad, and you could easily pick him out of a crowd of everyone else, which didn't hold much weight since Adam was the only guy worth looking at in the room. Johnny was also cute, and I had to admit his outfits were better, but Adam would win my heart every time.

"Shut up! I love your hair, and if you cut it, I'll take your bike," I affirmed.

Adam shook his head and laughed, but I was serious. Everyone could nitpick about how he needed to cut it, but where were their hairlines? Oh, that's what I thought.

"What were you going to do today," he questioned.

"Well, I was coming to your house to ask if you were free. Summer's almost over, and we've only hung out three times this break," I acknowledged.

"Really? I could've sworn we hung out more than that," Adam responded.

"Nope, it was three. I counted. Well, three and a half, counting the time, I ran into you and Johnny at the beach. I don't know if you remember," I admitted.

"Oh no, I remember- especially that bikini," he murmured.

"What was that," I interrogated.

"I said I remember the beach. I was supposed to hang out with Johnny today, but I don't think he'd mind if I brought you along," he claimed.

"Hell yeah," I exclaimed.

"Great. He's got this awesome treehouse- but don't look at his magazines. I don't think he ever expected to bring a girl up there," he claimed.

I followed Adam up to the treehouse, where Johnny sat in a chair looking out in the open with binoculars. He hadn't paid attention to who had just entered his boy cave.

"Hey, Johnny," Adam spoke.

"Hey, dude," Johnny responded.

He continued looking through the binoculars, twisting the lens to zoom in before he turned them toward me.

"Nice. Hey dude, I can see your hot friend from the beach from here. It's like she's looking directly at me," Johnny announced.

"Dude, shut up," Adam urged.

"No way. You're missing out. You'd better go ahead and tell her you like her because if you don't, I'm next in line," Johnny stated.

Adam rushed over to the other boy and attempted to snatch the binoculars out of his hand, but Johnny refused to let them go.

"Hey dude, you can't be mad if she wants me. You saw how she was looking at my necklace that day- girls love my necklaces," Johnny insisted.

The two boys continued tussling over the binoculars until Adam finally won, snatching the lens and tossing them onto the floor. Johnny's face paled as he realized I was there the entire time. The two boys shared an awkward look before turning back to me.

"Hi, Adam's hot friend," Johnny greeted.

"She has a name, you know," Adam exclaimed.

"Hi, Y/n," Johnny responded.

"Hi, Johnny," I spoke.

As if they couldn't make it any more awkward, Johnny stood up and dragged Adam to the opposite side of the treehouse. I couldn't make out what they were saying entirely, but they were undoubtedly overwhelmed as I sat there and watched them freak out. The two boys stopped conversing and walked back over to me. Awkwardly smiling, they nudged their elbows against each other for the other to speak first. Ultimately, one of them gave in.

"That was a prank- we planned that," Johnny lied.

Adam leaned over to him and gave him some pointers on lying.

"Dude, you don't sound confident she won't believe you," Adam murmured.

Johnny nodded and turned back to me, adjusting his shoulders to make him seem more stout. He tried again, this time with a deeper voice.

"I've seen hotter girls than you in those binoculars before," Johnny declared.

Adam's jaw dropped as he stared at his friend while Johnny folded his arms to try and make himself look more badass. I slowly nodded my head. Maybe I should've let these two have their guys-only day.

"I think I'm gonna go now," I expressed.

The two boys immediately rushed over to try and stop me.

"Wait, no, Y/n, don't go. He didn't mean it like that," Adam explained.

"Yeah, you're up there. You're hot," Johnny exclaimed.

"Thanks, I guess. I still feel like I should let you two have your moment," I stated.

"No, wait. I can ask my mom to make you a sandwich," Johnny said.

"His mom really does make the best sandwiches," Adam supported.

"Hmm. I guess I could go for a sandwich."
