The day felt like it would never come, but school was out until August. Keely and I sat on her front porch, remembering the previous year and fantasizing about the future. Last year wasn't our prime, but we had a couple more years left. So the world had better watch out because once my braces are removed in two years, it's over for everyone, and no one can tell me anything- except my dentist. I couldn't be 'Braceface' for too long.
"So what's one thing you wanted to do but didn't this school year," I asked.
"Randomly, I wanted to start a band. I have no clue why. It just came to me one day," she confessed.
"That would be epic. I'd be your number one fan. I'd have to fight Phil over backstage passes, but I could manage," I joked.
"I love the enthusiasm, but no. What about you? What's something you felt you missed out on," she chuckled.
"Well, I wanted to ask out this guy, but I got too scared," I admitted.
"Wait- you have a crush on someone. Why am I just now hearing about this," she exclaimed.
"Because you'd run and tell Phil, and even if he was a bottle, he couldn't hold water," I acknowledge.
"I would not," she defended.
"Yes, you would," I argue.
"I would not- okay, maybe I would. You know, sometimes words slip out without thinking," she explained.
"Exactly, and that's why I'd prefer them to stay in," I expressed.
"Boo, you're no fun. Can you at least tell me about the guy? Describe him to me, but be vague. If he's going to be a mystery, I need the illusion," she chuckled.
"Fine. He goes to our school, he's a nerd, and he's the sweetest guy you'll ever meet," I declared.
"Eww- Phil," she gagged.
"No, of course not. Phil's not even a nerd," I laughed.
"That's because you're not around him as much as I am. Not all nerds are geniuses like Seth," Keely stated.
My face grew flush before my brain processed it. The sound of his name always made my stomach feel funny. I'd had a crush on Seth since I'd met him last year in the cafeteria, but I'd never told him or anyone else. Though I was friends with Keely and Phil, Seth and I didn't speak to each other much because anytime I saw him, I would become an embarrassment. This summer, I would be able to work on my confidence. I probably wouldn't see him for three months, so I had plenty of time.
"Shoot. I almost forgot I promised Phil we'd meet him at his house before we headed to the mall," she exclaimed.
"Ah nice, what were you going to third wheel me while you guys treated our girl's day as a date," I interrogated.
"No, if anything, he'd be the third wheel. Besides, I don't know how many more times I have to say this, but I don't like Phil like that," she defended.
"Mmm hmm, sure," I mocked.
Keely rolled her eyes as we got up and walked towards Phil's house. As much as she claimed she didn't like him, she was always excited to be around him. I got nervous while I followed her. Seth was usually around Phil, not as much as Keely was, but he'd pop up. It was the first day of summer vacation, so what were the chances Seth spent the night at Phil's as I did at Keely's?
"Keely, where are we going," I questioned.
"To Phil's house, duh," she said.
"Who's all going to be there," I interrogated.
"Y/n, how would I know who all will be at Phil's house? I'm not a psychic," she argued.
"My bad- will Seth be there," I asked.
"Y/n, I- wait a minute. It's Seth. You have a crush on Seth Wosmer. Oh, god, you honestly might be a nerd too. Why do I attract so many nerds," she gasped.
"Because sometimes, Keely, you must realize and accept your truth. Welcome to the nerd squad, fellow dork. We've been waiting for you," I mocked.
Phil was already waiting outside as Keely and I walked up laughing, but our giggles stopped as we realized who stood beside him.
"Hey, Keely. Hi, Y/n," Phil greeted.
"Hi, Phil- and Seth," Keely responded.
I tried to speak, but no words would leave my mouth as I stuttered like a baby. He was right there looking at me with concern. Keely motioned for me to say something, but I couldn't. It was not as easy as they thought.
"Um... Y/n. Are you alright," Phil called out.
Once again, I had made myself look foolish. I couldn't recover from the embarrassment, so I shielded myself behind Keely instead. Keely moved to reveal me, but I hid behind her again.
"I think they can still see you," Keely advised.
"Shut up. You're blowing my cover," I insisted.
"Nope. We can still see you," Phil stated.
With a nervous smile, I shuffled from behind Keely and waved at the two boys. I tried to refrain from hyperventilating as Seth looked at me.
"Hi, Phil, and hello- Seth," I gulped.
"Hey, Y/n," Phil chuckled.
"Hello, Y/n. I like your dress today, Y/n. That color suits you," Seth complimented.
"I-I-I," I stuttered.
"She means thank you," Keely spoke.
I hoped he wouldn't come to the mall with us because I had not gotten the practice I needed to be confident around him. It was as if Keely read my mind as she popped the question.
"So, Seth, are you coming to the mall with us," she questioned.
I thanked her with a smile.
"Yeah. At first, I wasn't going to because I thought I would be Phil or your third wheel, but now that I see Y/n is going- most definitely," Seth answered.
I gulped at that response. It amazed me how our girl's day turned into following Keely and Phil on their non-date while I avoided my crush day. I was surprised that he would still want to hang out around me even after how strange I acted.
"What do you mean third wheel? If anything, Keely would've been our third wheel if Y/n wasn't here. It wasn't a date- I don't like Keely like that," Phil said.
"Mhmm. Sure," Seth and I chuckled in sync.
"Jinx," I exclaimed.
The curly-haired brunette smiled at me as Phil and Keely exchanged looks. Whatever conversation they were having mentally was unknown, but they both seemed to agree as they nodded. Phil walked over to Seth and put his hand on his shoulder.
"Seth, buddy. You know what that means. You've got to take Y/n to buy her a drink," Phil advised.
Seth's eyes widened as he looked at me.
"I guess I do owe you a soda now. What kind do you like," Seth questioned.
"I- uh-um," I stuttered.
Keely elbowed my arm to help me get my words right.
"Ouch- I like orange soda," I stated.
"Cool. I like those, too. I'll get us both one," he said.
Phil glared at Seth, making him nod and turn back to me.
"Well, how about instead of buying us both one. We share one- with two straws," Seth suggested.
"Tha-tha," I stammered.
Once again, Keely elbowed my arm. This time, harder than before.
"Ouch again- that's fine by me," I responded.
"Cool. You know we never get to hang out, so maybe while they have their date, we could hang out," he answered.
"It's not a date," Keely argued.
"Yeah, if anything, we should be third-wheeling, you guys," Phil followed.
