My mind would not stop racing as today was the one day that could change my life forever. My mother says I'm being overdramatic, but I wasn't. Our school was hosting our science fair today. Not to say it's the most crucial thing in my life, but I always started on my project the day after the previous fair. Losing was not an option for me. I didn't know what I would do if I lost. My head could explode from shock and horror, especially if I lost this year. Things were different this year because, unlike previous competitions, I had a suitable competitor.
Seth Wosmer was one of our school's most intelligent students. Of course, he was not more intelligent than me, but he was right in my caliber. The other smart kids of the school weren't even wise but were cleverer than the jocks, which isn't impressive- you just had to have a regular brain capacity. But that curly-haired nerd was different, and no, it's because I have a crush on him- because I don't. Dare I say it, but Seth Wosmer's wits would impress even me. But he still wasn't wiser than me, so I won. And I would win again. I refuse to let Seth Wosmer beat me. Refuse, I say.
People roamed around the room, examining our tables with impressed faces. The turnout for the event was way more than I'd expected. My peers didn't appreciate science fairs, usually because others called it a nerd-fest. Plus, our science fair was being held on a Saturday, and most students wouldn't miss their weekend to learn at school for an extra day, but the crowded building surprised me. The only reason I could come up with this many students to show up was extra credit, but even most of my failing peers wouldn't take that bait. Everyone seemed interested in one specific table and the person it belonged to.
I glared at Seth Wosmer while he informed someone about his 'project,' if that's even what I could call it. I hadn't seen it yet- but I knew it couldn't be better than mine. He gave an adorable dimpled grin as he gave his demonstrations, being all cute and whatnot- that was unfair. He shouldn't be allowed to smile at people. It would woo the judges, and they'd vote for him out of flattery; I would report him. I didn't understand what he was smiling about anyway. You don't smile when you know you're about to lose. He was probably thinking about beating me, but that would never happen. After a group left his table, I stormed over to his so-called 'demonstration' since his table wasn't too far from mine.
"Hello, Seth Wosmer," I sneered.
There it was. That adorable dimpled grin, he gave it while he looked at me. He was trying to use his attractive face to lure me. It would not work on me like it did with these simpletons.
"Hi, Y/n. Why do you always refer to me as my full name," he greeted.
I assumed that was how everyone addressed their enemies. But he was not slick. I saw what he was doing. Putting on an act as if he wasn't my rival and just a mere acquaintance. He'd have to try much harder than that.
"Do not act foolish with me, Seth Wosmer," I declared.
"Um- okay. Well, did you come over to see my table? It's pretty neat. Everyone so far likes it, and I think you... ," he exclaimed.
"Ha. Such foolishness like what this is will not impress me, Seth Wosmer," I interrupted.
The boy slowly nodded at me with a concerned look.
"I will be watching you, Seth Wosmer. So don't try your manipulative and cute tricks because I will not stand for it. Not everyone will fall for you being adorable- I haven't, and I'm not. I will never, Seth Wosmer. Never," I exclaimed.
"You know, you are an interesting person, Y/n," Seth stated.
"Compliments will not work on me either. I'm watching you, Seth Wosmer. You and your attractive curly hair, nice brown eyes, and beautiful smile- I do not like you," I asserted.
