the importance of the sun

In Winona, Arizona, the sun is always out, shining around 265 days of the year. The summers are hot, and the arid makes air only makes it seem worse.

The only reprieve from the warm climate was the Grand Canyon itself, only a short drive away from the small town. The changes in elevation causes massive temperature changes during the seasons, something not all Arizona residences get to experience. How special, they say. People near the canyon get to experience both the powdery snow and the wild rain, and other weather conditions caused by the ever changing humidity. How special.

From an early age, Kiwáni Rodriguez realized how special the Earth around her truly was. She saw it as the soft sun rays filtered through her blinds early in the morning. She felt it when the wind brushed her skin, leaving a breezy kiss in its wake.

She also realized how often the people around her did not.

"Kiwáni! Come off of there!" her mother shouted from the front porch. Lucía Rodriguez's arms were tightly crossed over her body, trying to convey anger, but the smile in her voice told a different story.

Kiwáni looked down from the roof, where she had been previously soaking up the sun. The near-blinding beams of light were comforting to the girl, it felt as though the sun itself was seeping through her skin and making its home in her bones. She skin felt warm, but that was the way she liked it. Sighing slightly, Kiwáni slid down the roof, landing on the smooth rocks in front of the her mother's house.

"You're supposed to be at school Kiwáni," her mother voiced, her eyebrow raised.

The girl shrugged her shoulders into herself, and looked at the ground. She was not normally this shy with her mother. "It's the last day."
