Hallie arrived in France, instantly being met by the rutilant rays of the sun casting shafts of light through the windows of the living room. She could faintly distinguish the sounds of the waves crashing against the receding coastline of the beach, from the inside of the house.
Hallie looked around nervously, taking in the appearance of the house she once considered home. Although decoratively the house was a carbon copy of what it had been in the summer, the house was completely desolate and lacking any paternal warmth.
In fact, the house felt chillingly eerie, barren without the sounds of Marie's demanding calls or the euphoria of laughter from her Dad.
The house was still elegant and old-worldy - the place where Hallie had grown up for over ten years of her life. Only now, it felt like she had never even lived there before; like she had never even stepped foot in the French manor.
Feeling extremely overwhelmed by it all, Hallie was quick to escape the old memory, taking to the streets of the little French town.
Hallie passed by the familiar contours of the victorian-styled houses on her way, taking short moments to familiarise herself once more. It all felt foreign. It no longer felt like home.
The girl eventually reached the tip of the coast, spotting the azure blue beach house amongst a row of ten dotted along the shoreline.
Hallie remembered the conversation with Sirius at the very end of summer, whilst the two were on the beach.
"You see that house over there. That one used to be my house; the blue one in the centre."
"I like going over there a few times each summer. Reminds me of Mum and home."
"One day it will be mine. Dad said when I'm old enough I can have it."
"I'm pretty sure he put the house under my name in his will."
Hallie quickly made her way up the shoreline, visibly enthralled to be experiencing the house for the first time, since it had become officially her own.
Hallie made her way up the driveway of the property, however her advance was cut short upon seeing figures moving about behind the stained glass of the door.
The girl furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, as another dark shadow passed behind the glass. What were people doing in her home?
Before Hallie could even blink, the door opened quickly, revealing a short, slim woman in the entryway. The middle aged woman had thick, tawny hair, twisted intricately into a sophisticated bun on top of her head. She was dressed in a gown that seemed to mirror the colours of the ocean, which complemented the olive complexion of her skin.
"Bonjour chérie, pouvons-nous t'aider?" [Hello darling, can we help you?]
Hallie stared back at the woman, a look of perplexion etched onto her face. She opened her mouth to reply, finding no confidence to bring the words up her throat.
"Es-tu sûre que tu vas bien ma chérie?" [Are you sure you are alright my dear?]
Hallie nodded slowly, watching as the older woman looked down upon the teenager in concern.
"Je suis désolé," [I'm sorry] Hallie replied apprehensively, nervously twisting her hands together behind her back. "Quoi...comment?" [What...how?]
"Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas?" [What's wrong?] the older woman asked sceptically, seeking answers from the girl before her. Yet all Hallie felt was numb. Already she was picturing the worst.
"Vivez-vous ici?" [Do you live here?] Hallie asked, praying for the answer she sought to hear. Only Hallie's heart deflated, upon seeing the woman nod her head assertively.
