Fifty Seven

After the show had taken a scheduled commercial break, Kate gathered us around her on stage. She held mine and Zoë's hand, and O2 formed themselves into a group hug. "You ready guys?"

We all just nodded, unable to speak.

"I'm going to announce the names firstly of the two acts going through to the final" she said. "If you're name is not mentioned, sorry you're not going through"

"The first act guaranteed a place in tonight's final is....."

"Zoë!"

No surprise there then I thought to myself. I could sense that I would be going home. Kate squeezed my hand.

"The second person going through to tonight's live final, and head to head with Zoë is...."

"Vicky!"

I stared at her stunned. She could see the look of surprise on my face, so she hugged me. "Well done love" she said a gave me a gentle shove.

I went and stood next to Zoë, where we had been told to stand if our names were called. I hadn't thought I was actually going to be standing there though. I looked around the studio audience, and could see my mum, dad, Sophie, Dave and Ronan all going mad.

"We'll be back after the break with the live final of the X Factor" Kate was saying.

Me and Zoë were equally as shocked as each other about getting this far.

We somehow managed to compete against each other by singing the same song. The one that had been written specifically for the show, and the one that would be the first single for whoever won.

I thought Zoë sang it better than me, but for some reason the judges didn't seem to agree.

"Right now, I think I'm looking at the winner of this competition" Simon said to me.

I shook my head at Zoë.

"Well let's find out" Kate was suddenly back onstage with us.

"Silence please everyone for the results"

She put one arm around me, and the other around Zoë.

"The votes have been counted, I've been told it's very close, but there can only be one winner"

"Nervous girls?"

We laughed.

"Go Vic!" I heard Ro and Soph shout from the audience.

Kate laughed.

"The winner of the very first X Factor series is........"

There was a silence that seemed to go on forever.
