"Vic, just to let you know" said Mike as we pulled up outside his house. "If Karen says anything to you. Don't take it personally ok?"

I looked at him confused, she'd seemed fine earlier...

"She is ok about us staying isn't she?"

Mike nodded. "Yeah it's not that, it's just" he sighed and for the first time I noticed the hurt in his eyes. "she doesn't..." he sighed again. "Nothing I do seems to be good enough anymore Vic"

I reached out and touched him arm softly, gave it reassuring squeeze. I couldn't bear to see him upset after all that he'd done for me.

"Anyway," he said changing the subject. "Let's get you inside eh?" I nodded slowly suddenly nervous.

When we got into the house he directed me up to the stairs to one of the spare bedrooms. I'd never been upstairs in Mike's house before, it was normally a case of in the front door and straight through to the studio. He followed me up the stairs to make sure I had everything I needed.

"I'm just going go back downstairs, I'll leave you to get sorted. I think you should get some sleep. But we'll be in the living room if you do want to come down later" I nodded, "thanks Mick".

Once he'd left the room I placed Jessica in the travel cot that I'd hastily packed, sat on the bed and had a good look around. It was slightly smaller than our spare, Mike's house was in fact pretty much the same as ours, but on a slightly smaller scale.

It was beautifully decorated and I smiled to myself, bet that was Karen's influence. I had a sudden flashback of the pain etched on Mike's face in the car, and really hoped that they were gonna be ok. They were pretty much made for each other.

I'm sure whatever it was, they'd work it out.

I got up and pulled my mobile from my bag. I should've done as mike said and got some sleep, and although I really didn't want to worry ro. I really wanted to speak to my husband.

I let it ring for a couple of minutes. But there was clearly no way he was going to answer his phone tonight. I sighed and thought about sending him a message. But there was no point in worrying him like that, especially if he had to be on tv first thing.

I jumped a couple of minutes later when there was a soft knocking at the door.

"Come in" I said quietly.

Mick opened the door and stepped into the room, almost uncertainly. "I bought you a drink. Thought it might help you sleep" he said as he handed me a glass of whisky. "Thanks" I said.

I normally wouldn't touch the stuff. But he had a valid point. I looked at Jessica sleeping peacefully, unaware of the drama going on in the world around her. I smiled at Mike and laughed, "I think you're the angel"

He laughed, looked embarrassed, then said, "I'll let you get some sleep. If you need anything, I mean anything at all, just knock. It's the next door down on the left"

"Thanks Mike"

I watched as he left the room, and shut the door, then I let the tears roll down my face.

After all he'd done, I couldn't tell him, that all I wanted, was my husband here, could I?
