Michael
I have never believed in love at first sight, but when I met my former band mates wife for the first time I questioned everything I thought I knew about love.
She was so beautiful.
I mean, I shouldn't have even been looking. Not only was she married, to a very good friend of mine. But I was also in long term, happy relationship.
It wasn't the first time I'd questioned the "happiness" element.
I should have seen it as a sign. Even back then I knew that Karen and I were wrong for each other, but it wasn't as if I could start anything with Vicky, and I did love Karen.
I was just never exactly sure if she felt the same way.
I must admit I was surprised to get a call from him after so long, but it wasn't as if we'd ever fallen out.
I'll admit I was curious what he might be working on. He said on the phone he wanted my ideas about a few things, but he was never the sort to take criticism lightly. We didn't really talk much about any potential work over lunch, we were more interested in catching up. So we made plans to meet again that evening.
I couldn't imagine he'd want my input after working with the likes of Gregg Alexander and Rick Nowels on his first couple of albums.
We'd arranged to meet at a pub near to mine, the infamous Man O' War. Infamous for being the haunt of Irish celebs who had made it to the outskirts of Dublin and weren't fussed about being recognised on a daily basis.
"I hope you don't mind that I bought Vic?"
"Of course not. Delighted to meet you, finally", I said with a wink at Ro to let them both know I was joking.
She giggled at this. "You too"
I looked at her curiously. "Self confessed Boyzone fan" she said with a grin.
"Ah well now, I hope you don't believe all the stories he's told you?"
"And I'm guessing he's your favourite..."
She blushed at this.
Okay. Maybe not.
Interesting...
"I'd never tell" she winked at me.
"Anyway excuse my manners, can I get you both a drink?"
"Sure, Vic?"
"Something non alcoholic" she pulled a face.
"Heavy one last night was it?"
"Something like that" she muttered whist sneaking a glance at Ronan.
Too late I realised I'd put my foot in it, she was obviously in the very early stages of pregnancy.
Now most men would be immune to this, but I'd grown up surrounded by sisters who shared far more of their lives than they needed too and there'd been something about the way she'd been holding herself.
"Ro?"
"Guinness please Mick"
"Just popping to the loo, I'll be back in a sec" she tiptoed to kiss Ronan and made her way to the bathroom.
"Soooooooo" Ronan looked at me expectantly.
"What can I say, you my friend, certainly hit the jackpot!"
"Right?" he grinned at me.
I hoped she knew what she had let herself in for...
