Vic
I was feeling a little nervous as I sat and waited for Mick in the green room. I think we'd both known for a while that there could be something between us, but neither of us had been brave enough to acknowledge it, let alone do anything about it.
Something felt different about tonight. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I knew Mick would never make a move on his bandmate's wife even if that was ex-wife.
It was time I told him my latest news.
"Vic" I stood up as he entered the room, making sure that Jess was sleeping where I'd put her on the sofa. She'd been tired since we'd come back stage, but like most kids her age had been trying to resist sleep.
I swallowed hard as he engulfed me in a hug. I'm sure he must have felt my heart rate quicken at his touch. "Mick"
"Are you sure you're okay?" He asked as he released me from his embrace and held me at arms length.
"I am now" I nodded truthfully. "You were fantastic by the way"
"Thanks" he grinned at me. "You know it feels so good to be back on that stage!"
"I bet!!"
"Hey, I have some news". I lifted myself up on the counter and patted the space beside me. Mick sat beside me and looked at me expectantly.
"Divorce papers came through this morning. I..."
"Is that why he's been weird all day?"
"Maybe?"
"I... truthfully Mick, I don't care"
"He hurt me too much, I just want the whole thing done with now"
Mick nodded, "I understand that"
"Hey, where are you and Jess staying tonight?"
"We were gonna stay with Soph, she said she'd look after Jess in the morning if I fancied a lie in"
"You know you're both welcome to come back to St. David's with us"
"I'm sure there's a room going spare"
I smiled at this. Rooms were always overbooked in case of emergency. Very similar to when I'd been booking rooms for rugby teams.
Though that seemed like a lifetime ago now.
"Thanks Mick. I kinda want to take advantage of my free babysitting service though!"
"Ha! Can't say I blame you!"
"How about you, me and Jess do something tomorrow, soundchecks not 'til later. Or maybe you and I could go out for dinner or something, have a proper catch up"
As much as I knew Soph wouldn't mind looking after Jess, I kind of liked the idea of the three of us doing something together.
But I liked the idea of dinner alone with him much more...
"Dinner would be great Mick, I'll give you a call in the morning yeah? I'd best get this one home to bed" I added with a grin.
"Of course" he hopped down off the side, and offered me his hand to do the same, then swiftly had me in a tight goodbye hug.
"Night Vic" he kissed me on the cheek.
"Night Mick"
"Thank you"
"No need to thank me" he winked at me as he left the room.
I think he knew how much I loved that, and grinned to myself as I woke Jess gently. I knew she'd want to speak to 'Aunty Soph' when we got back, and I knew I'd get interrogated as soon as I told her about my dinner plans with Mick.
But I couldn't help but feel that my life was about to take a turn in an unexpected but welcome direction. And I couldn't wait!
