After the two days of phone training had passed, everyone had now received the address and time for using their assigned phones. Some were instructed to go to public institutions, such as libraries, museums, post offices, or phone booths. The administrators of these locations had been notified in advance to reserve the areas where the phones were located from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
The managers or supervisors were not allowed to ask questions or challenge the orders from their superiors; they simply had to comply. However, they couldn't help but notice that some of the visitors wore rather retro clothing.
At the military base, wizards had also been trained in using the phones.
They all gathered in the room where 20 phones were installed. While waiting for their turn, they occupied themselves by reading, playing wizard's chess, or Exploding Snap.
Each of them had 80 minutes to talk.
Tonks was in the second group. As she observed the row of phones, she realized she couldn't report anything to the Order without raising suspicion, as the system seemed designed to prevent any leaks.
When it was her turn, Tonks approached the available phone and dialed the number.
Tonks: Hi, Dad.
Ted: Nymphadora, it's good to hear your voice.
Andromeda: You have no idea how worried we've been about you.
Tonks: I know, Mom, but I couldn't tell you anything. Everything must be kept secret, but don't worry, I'm fine. How are things over there?
Ted: Everything's fine, sweetheart. No attacks.
Tonks: I'm glad to hear that. With most of the Aurors here, I was a little worried.
The conversation continued, covering trivial matters and anecdotes. When the time ran out, she said her goodbyes, but not before mentioning they'd speak again next week.
In Tonks' mind, it was impossible to pass along information through the phone. The only way would be to wait until their wands were returned.
A week passed, and they still could only communicate with their families via phone. So far, their wands had not been returned. Scrimgeour claimed they were still undergoing proper maintenance.
Training sessions continued to be physical, but at least everyone had improved since the beginning. Interactions with the other soldiers had also become friendlier; during meals, they shared stories from both the magical and Muggle worlds, and any questions or doubts were readily answered.
In General Mack's office, Scrimgeour was present, and both were reviewing the inventory of weapons acquired so far.
General Mack: Leroy.
An elf appeared between them.
Leroy (elf): You called, master?
General Mack: I want you to go to the Minister and ask if the city has been evacuated.
Leroy (elf): Understood, master.
Scrimgeour: Here, this is the list of the best broom flyers.
General Mack: Thank you.
In his mind, the general was thinking about how to assign the troops.
The door opened, and Sasuke Uchiha entered.
Sasuke: General Mack, Scrimgeour, how are things progressing here?
General Mack: Working on troop distribution.
Sasuke: We need to do this as soon as possible. We need them to learn to work as a team and follow orders quickly. We only have 18 days left.
The two began reviewing the results sheet of the wizards to efficiently assign them.
