Weeks Before the New Year:
Darkness loomed over the foggy and icy air of Nurmengard. The cells surrounding a small chamber reflected off the metallic floor, where Gellert Grindelwald rested at the highest point of the castle.
In the lower levels, other prisoners had descended into madness, desperate to escape.
The guards strolled calmly, as everything seemed peaceful; the most dangerous of the prisoners, Gellert Grindelwald, hadn't caused any trouble since his defeat by Dumbledore.
However, suddenly, a figure cloaked in a cape appeared in the middle of the courtyard.
The guards froze at the sight of this figure that had materialized out of nowhere, despite the prison's anti-apparition protections.
The figure raised a wand, and a light flashed momentarily before vanishing.
The guards couldn't understand what was happening, as the light seemed to have no effect on them.
Guard 1: Raise your hands and drop your wand.
All the guards pointed their wands at the figure.
The figure cast several green light spells, and the guards screamed in terror as they recognized the Killing Curse.
Guards 2, 3, 4: PETRIFICUS...
But they all fell silent upon hearing the next spell.
The figure yelled: FIENDFYRE.
Several fiery creatures emerged, burning the guards alive.
The guards' screams woke the prisoners, who shouted in support of the mysterious figure. As the hood was removed, the figure was recognized by all.
Prisoner 1: VOLDEMORT!
Guard 10: ATTACK, DON'T LET HIM ESCAPE!
Guard 10 raised his wand, but no spell emerged; the same happened with the remaining four guards.
Voldemort, seeing this, cast the Killing Curse.
Prisoner 1: Well done, Voldemort.
Prisoner 2: Come on, Voldemort, free us.
The other prisoners begged Voldemort to release them.
Voldemort: Who said you could speak my name?
Prisoner 1: What do you mean?
Voldemort smiled and killed them all with FIENDFYRE.
The prisoners screamed as they burned alive.
When the screams ceased and the flames subsided, Voldemort began climbing the stairs to the tower.
Upon reaching the cell, he found Grindelwald sitting calmly.
Gellert Grindelwald: I know why you're here. You're after it, aren't you, Voldemort?
Voldemort: Where is it?
Gellert Grindelwald just smiled.
Voldemort: I said, where is it?
Gellert Grindelwald: The wand disappeared long ago, Voldemort. You'll never find it.
Grindelwald smiled again.
Gellert Grindelwald: You can kill me, Voldemort. I've welcomed death for a long time.
Voldemort: You are brave, Grindelwald. But you have no idea who you're dealing with. I am Lord Voldemort.
Gellert Grindelwald: You're wasting your time, Voldemort. I won't tell you anything.
Voldemort: Oh, but I think you will. Crucio!
Grindelwald screamed in agony; the curse lasted for at least five minutes before it ended.
Voldemort: Where is it, Grindelwald?
Grindelwald shook his head.
Voldemort: Crucio!
Grindelwald continued shaking his head.
Voldemort: Let's see how long it takes until you break. Crucio!
Half an hour later, Voldemort lifted the curse. Grindelwald lay on the floor, unable to stand.
Voldemort, with a flick of his wand, forced Grindelwald upright to meet his gaze.
Gellert Grindelwald: Damn, I'm weak... I must raise my Occlumency defenses, quic...
Voldemort performed Legilimency and found the phrase: for the greater good.
Voldemort: What a fool I've been, it's always been with Dumbledore.
Gellert Grindelwald: You'll never succeed.
Voldemort: Avada Kedavra!
Voldemort: I am Voldemort, the Dark Wizard who conquered death, and now all I need is that wand to be invincible. Watch from hell.
Voldemort began to fly, and with a wave of his wand, cast a spell into the sky: Morsmordre.
The Dark Mark appeared in the sky.
Voldemort flew off toward England.

At the Bulgarian Ministry:
Minister Obalonks was troubled, as his political rivals criticized him harshly in the newspapers due to the disappearance of Mykew Gregorovitch, the country's best wandmaker, and for failing to invest more galleons in public security.
Minister Obalonks had dispatched all his Auror teams to find Gregorovitch, but after two months, nothing had been found.
The minister's door swung open.
Minister Obalonks: Come in.
Auror: Minister, we've found Gregorovitch.
Minister Obalonks: Finally, some good news. How is he?
Auror: Minister, I'm afraid we arrived too late.
Minister Obalonks: What do you mean?
Auror: He's dead.
Minister Obalonks: That can't be. My opponents will make a huge scandal out of this.
Auror: I have more news.
Minister Obalonks: More bad news, isn't it?
Auror: I'm afraid so.
Minister Obalonks: Speak.
Auror: Nurmengard Prison has been destroyed.
Minister Obalonks: It was Gellert Grindelwald.
The minister trembled, recalling Grindelwald's atrocities.
Auror: He's dead, along with the other prisoners and guards.
Minister Obalonks: Who was it?
Auror: The one who must not be named. According to the report from the Austrian Ministry, the Dark Mark was seen above the prison.
