"It doesn't matter to me who you kill, I just need their semi-intact bodies."

"For what? To sell their bruised and cut-up organs on the dark web?"

"Who do you take me for? An imbecile that greeds after an ever-moving goalpost of wealth? No, I have plans far grander than any amount of worthless pieces of paper."

"Fuck, we're getting nowhere. Who's my target?"

"It doesn't matter, anyone will work. I couldn't care less."

"What? Do you want me to just off some random civilian?"

"You and I both know that there are horrible people who live in this world. If it placates your hesitation, then go kill them instead. Maybe that'll play to your need of being 'good' for a change."

"......"

"Oh, and I'll need far more than just one person. Bring them here when you're done, and if you even consider deserting or calling help... such a capable assassin such as yourself can deduce what would happen."

"I'm well aware of what a bargaining chip is, Doctor."

Valerie never thought she would be doing this again.

Lurking in the shadow with a blade hidden in her pockets. It doesn't take much to be an assassin; anyone can pick up a knife or gun and end someone else's life. It takes a lot more to be a good one. You hurt someone and they're bound to scream, it's a human instinct. Screaming attracts unwanted attention, which means consequences. Fate hates it when someone tries to act on their behalf, and when people step out of their finely woven path, fate sends Karma after the transgressors. Stealing fate's scissors... begets an equally blasphemous punishment.

"Hey little girl, what are you doing here?" asked a familiar man.

Hmph, finally.

"Nothing that you need to know about, fat ass," Valerenia responded bluntly, glaring at the intruder.

"Are you stupid? Insulting me in a dark alley where nobody dares to look? This is my territory, and if you don't want to be dead in a ditch, then I suggest you empty your pockets and leave with your life," the man spat angrily.

"Oh, how original of you. You have me shivering in my boots. Maybe I should strip and give you everything else too?" she hissed.

"Now that you mention it... I wouldn't mind a little something just about now," he replied with a nasty grin on his face.

"Disgusting," she turned around and faced the greasy man. "Since I'd rather not have a reason to test fate, I'll give you the same out. Leave now and you get to see tomorrow. Whatever that means to your miserable existence," she said sharply.

"Hah, you should have left when you had the chance. Now nobody is leaving until I've had my fun," the man growled, stalking closer.

"Wow, you're really insufferable. So, how many people have you killed? How many sins have you indulged that ended up scarring someone else forever? Karma's a bitch you know. The worst part is that you never know when they'll come for you. But when they do... You won't even get the chance to scream. Trust me, that's a fate nobody wants to have." her teal eyes glowed dimly in the dark alleyway.

"Save your rambling, they won't save you," the man glared, eyes twitching.

"Is that right? Well then, prove it asshole. Make my day," she shot back in annoyance.

The burly man charged at her, his thick hands outstretched angrily. Valerenia sighed and brought her arms up. The man tried to grab Valerenia in a bear hug and pull her to the ground, but in an instant, she dove under his right arm. She twisted her body in a blink of an eye and pulled out her concealed knife.

"Pathetic... you really should have left when you had the chance," she said, her voice dripping with disappointment as she spun around.

Before the man could turn around, she drove the knife across his neck. Blood-caked building to the left as the man's head dropped to the floor. His shocked eyes twitched uncontrollably as his body fell to the ground, blood still pouring from the stump on his head. Valerenia carefully wiped the blood off her blade, shaking her hands clean in one swift flick. She stared at the bloody mess in silence.

A crackle buzzed into her ear.

*That will do. Keep the head on next time, this kind of mess attracts attention that I don't want to deal with.*

The unsettling voice cuts out just as quickly as it came.

Valerenia sighed again, kneeling down to the dislocated head.

"Sometimes you get used to being able to speak, to cry, to sing, and to laugh. Life is a gift stolen from fate, and because of this, it will never cease until that score is settled. You never know when fate will take things from you, maybe it's a family member or friend, maybe it's a pet that you've loved, or maybe it's a partner that you thought would be with you for the rest of your life. Whatever the case is, fate is giving you a warning. Either you heed the blessing it has given you, or you suffer the consequences. Either case, it's already too late to get back the things you've taken for granted."

Valerie stared at the man's dulling eyes and shook her head. The blood pooled around the man's body, and the constant dripping from the severed parts echoed rhythmically against the alley's walls.

Look at me, giving advice to the dead. Maybe I have gone soft. Hmph, no matter. It's time for extraction.

Valerie reached into her pockets and pulled out a vial of dark fluid. Her lips pressed together into a thin line. She was supposed to throw this vial against the wall and apparently, it should make a portal that brings her to the agreed upon meeting spot. The liquid swirled inside the vial, almost as if it was alive. Whatever it was, it gave Valerenia the creeps.

Without a second thought, she wound her arm back and threw it against the wall. The black liquid hissed as it crawled down the bloodied bricks, and slowly formed into an oval-like gate. The liquid spun around clockwise, making a hypnotic spiral in the liquid. After a second of waiting, the liquid dispersed from the center, revealing an abandoned warehouse beyond its bubbling outline. Valerie could only scowl at the scientifically impossible occurrence.

Her earpiece buzzed again.

*What are you waiting for? Get on with it.*

Valerie stared through the eerie portal, a chill shooting down her back. She couldn't help but wonder if what the Doctor had said about hell was true.
