"Do you ever wonder what it's like outside of Ebbot?"
"I've... never thought about it before. I mean there are the two nations we learn about in our history classes, is that what you mean?"
"Yeah, I wonder what it's like to live in one of those crazy developed cities, and sometimes even beyond that too."
"Really? Those two are always fighting one day and then negotiating the next. The dance they insist on doing must be annoying to deal with for the regular people. And all for some ancient feud that happened who knows how long ago. I doubt either city would be a nice place to stay even with how tall their buildings are.
"I'm sure it's a lot for a Joe Schmo, I won't argue with that, but don't you wonder about the lives they live on a day-to-day basis? Their food, their work, their entertainment! Just imagine how different it must be from our day-to-day. Maybe they've even invented flying cars!"
"I see where you're coming from, but I'd be surprised if the conflict between the two isn't an everyday talking point. I mean, their unwillingness to yield the slightest to each other is why all of us are stuck here. Any non-citizen can be seen as a threat, even if we're just trying pass through. It's a wonder that this town is even standing in the first place. I'm surprised we haven't been wiped off the face of the earth just so they can have slightly bigger battle grounds."
"Come on, don't you think that's a little pessimistic? Do you really think they'll just stomp down a neutral neighboring town?"
"Moral standards are the last thing I'd think of when talking about those two places. Wouldn't put anything past them with how long they've dragged a dead horse."
"Were you even paying attention during history class? It's not as simple as a regular spat you can squash over some ice cream."
"Spare me the lesson please, I get that those rulers from two billion years ago were killed by the rival faction and whatever, but you'd think they'd sorted it out by now. It's like two children who got mad at each other when they were 5 because they stole a bit of dessert from the other's plate, then holding that grudge till they're old and senile. My point is, you'd think they've grown out of that tantrum-throwing age already, but nooo, they have to push their problem onto everyone else."
"... Can you blame them?"
"Huh?"
"For keeping this feud, I mean. All they want is an apology, an acknowledgment of the other side's suffering. Both nations feel like they've been wronged horribly in the past. That one negotiation gone wrong led to the death of both heirs. Both sides think the other had violated an unspoken trust. They felt it was a broken promise that needed to be repaid."
"Then just repay it. Why is it so hard to just admit fault and bury the hatchet?"
"Because they're human, just like you and me. When we're hurt, we feel like we are owed something for our pain. We focus on that unpaid debt because we think that's what will bring us back to where we started, that an equivalent exchange will fill in the piece that was taken. Pain blurs our vision of the paths forward; it makes us lose sight of the possibility to forgive. It's not like we want to keep grudges, but it's hard to change directions when you're stumbling through bramble. We opt to push through hoping for an end, only to find more of ourselves missing. That's why we feel empty even in the cases where that debt is eventually cleared."
