[Y/n]

Despite all prior objections, Y/n still found himself quietly trailing Chara near a crime scene. He sighed under his breath, another day of work canceled at her behest just like that. The forest loomed over them, trees sprouting upwards in all directions. They were just a dozen meters in from the edge of the forest and several dozen meters away from the area barred off by caution tape. Y/n's heart thumped anxiously in his chest, not only because the two of them were probably mere moments away from being caught by local law enforcement, but also because Chara had insisted upon looking for a creature supposedly able to kill gods. Gratuitous images of his own gruesome death at the claws of some monster only weakened his resolve.

"Remind me again why we're looking for this thing?" Y/n whispered aloud, his shoes crushing the dried autumn leaves with loud crunches.

"To figure out where it came from, and if not that, then to kill it. You already heard what that thing is capable of on T.V. Leaving it alive will only lead to more people dead," Chara replied without looking back.

"Why not leave it in the hands of the police? I'm sure they are capable of dealing with this."

"They wouldn't stand a chance. Without magic, the police would just be a bunch of sitting ducks. Well, in the end the issue would be dealt with, but at the cost of their lives."

"If the police don't stand a chance, then what am I supposed to do? Cower in fear behind a tree?"

"No one asked for you to come. You were lecturing me about all the dangers, and yet you still followed me anyway."

"I just came to make sure you didn't commit any crimes along the way. I'm in no position to pay for your bail if the police caught you snooping around."

"Great idea, so what happens if we both get caught?"

"That... won't happen," Y/n reassured despite recognizing his oversight.

"Uh huh," Chara hummed as she stepped around tall ferns and fallen branches.

The sun was still out, but just barely. Orange and pink splotches splattered the small portions of sky that peeked through the canopy. They had just an hour or so left before the forest was plunged into darkness. Hopefully Chara will be able to track that thing down before then, or else Y/n would have to use his phone's flashlight, and walking around a dark forest at night with a monster prowling around was nothing short of a horror movie.

"Oh, you froze back there when the news anchor was talking, did you remember anything new?"

"... Mostly bad memories of those creatures. It's all very hazy. Someone... no, my mother was carrying me their arms as swarms of people evacuated to the shrill shrieking of sirens. I... I was crying because my father had to stay back so he could help the other gods fend those monsters off. We managed to get to a protected shelter, but the atmosphere was suffocating. The place was packed to the brim and the people there were all trying to hold their emotions in. I was only a little kid at the time, so I did the only thing that I could do. Scream and clamber about with tears rolling down my face. My mother had to wrap me up in her wings, partially to placate me, partially to keep me from disturbing  everyone else."

"Your Mom had wings? The feathery kind, yeah? Was she a bird goddess?"

"I don't know. I can only remember how soft they were when she wiped my tears away."
