Somewhere above the skies...
Alphys was tiring away at a lab table. Her spectacles hung loosely from her lab coat's breast pocket, dangling precariously as she looked into the lens of the microscope. There was a minuscule drop of crimson liquid beaded up on the slide positioned under the layers of magnifying crystals, the bright light illuminating the surface of the liquid seemed to illogically sink into it, stealing rays that should have reflected off the surface. A notebook filled with test results sat idly beside the microscope, patiently awaiting the next set of data points.
Then a sudden shuffling broke her concentration, and her tail swayed in irritation.
"Well, this is a surprise. Your recovery was far quicker than predicted. How are you feeling, oh reckless Prince?" Alphys asks the barely awake patient without looking away from the microscope.
"Hgn... where am I? For Asgore's sake, turn that light down," Asriel groaned, trying to block his eyes from the splitting glow from above.
"You'll get used to it. Stop blabbering like a child, I'm trying to work," Alphys waved off dismissively, her fingers still deftly adjusting dials to get a better view of the bead of blood like liquid.
"Tch... my head hurts like someone ran a spear through it... Why am I in a hospital bed? Alphys what's going on?"
"You're suffering from an onset of symptoms caused by your own stupidity and lack of self control. A little stomach bug called "consequences", it'll eventually pass if you make the right decisions moving forward, but in the meantime, it's going to hurt for sure."
"How long was I out? Shit, have I missed any ascensions?" Asriel quickly sat up in realization, only to curse viciously at the pain searing up from every part of his body.
"Stop fussing, it will only make your condition worse, so sit your princely self down and I'll provide some needed context for you"
Asriel huffed a breath of annoyance but ultimately laid back down to not hurt himself more.
"Luckily for you Prince, there have been no ascensions since the incident, and to my knowledge, the Astral Plains haven't met any disturbances either in your month long slumber."
"A whole month?! Don't tell it's—" Asriel stammered.
"The month of P, yes. Tell me, do you remember what brought you here to this bed?"
"It's all very blurry in my mind. All I remember is a... fight?"
"Wow, impressive Prince Asriel. And here I was thinking you would become some mindless lobotomized rat after that stunt you pulled. Though, seeing that you even considered such an outlandish plan makes me believe that my previous description suits you quite well," Alphys shot at him pointedly.
"Ouch. What could I have possibly done to induce such a scalding slander?" He mumbled.
Alphys finally backed away from the microscope's lens and put her glasses back on. She then picked up a pen from nearby and quickly jotted down some notes. After recording her observations, she carefully opened a small vial filled with the same red liquid beading up on the slide and meticulously guided the drop on the slide back into the vial before sealing it once more. Alphys placed the vial in a special holder she created to safeguard important and fragile objects before finally turning to face Asriel.
"Looks like I'll have to fill you in, after all."
"Why does it... Wait! Cha—" Asriel started.
"Stop it. Lest you find yourself in yet another perilous predicament," Alphys retorted sharply.
"......"
"Seriously, picking a fight with Cold Eye of Judgement and ingesting purified DT, and for what? To cast yourself down from the sky in a futile search of a fallen angel? Even for you, I'd say that is beyond reckless," she scolded.
"I— She wasn't just some fallen angel! She was our friend! Have your years as a god already eroded the time we spent together as children?"
"You must have lost more of your mind than I thought. So let me remind you, I am the God of Knowledge. Every single detail and piece of information that I have ever come across has been permanently etched into my mind. Every memory I have ever had can be recalled perfectly, so no, I do remember the time of our youth. I am simply not chained down by it."
"That's absurd! Do you even hear yourself? You saw what was hidden under that library. It's clear that there was something wrong with the previous God of Knowledge! Can you really tell me that Gaster was victimless in that trial? How do we know Chara deserved to be cast down from the sky?!"
"First, it was a trial of Gaster's death. Killing a god is a crime no matter the circumstances. The undocumented experimentation under the library, overreaching tests on unwilling subjects, the secret containment of carriers of the Seed of Calamity, the use of forbidden magic to alter the memories of the gods, all would have fallen to another separate trial, the results of the original suspended until all the subsidiary ones come to a close."
"So you know that he is in the wrong here! Why can't this be used as evidence to bring her back?" Asriel asked desperately.
"Because Gaster's murder was not the only reason why Angel 723 was cast down from the sky. In fact, the only reason she managed to defeat Gaster was the Seed of Calamity within her. That is the thing Sans made his decision on, not the fact that she killed Gaster," Alphys retorted calmly.
"...Fuck. Is she at least doing alright down there?"
"That's not something I can answer. I don't preoccupy myself with the lives of humans, even if someone who was once my friend has fallen into the realm of those mortals."
"Great, that's just fucking great..." Asriel huffed angrily, sliding down into his hospital bed to sulk.
"The profanities just flowing today, huh? Even after your deep body cleansing, your temperament is no different from before. Nonetheless, Toriel might have some good news for you about that certain obsession of yours. Plus, she's been worried sick, and I think you owe her an apology for that crude attempt to hold yourself hostage."
"Really?" Asriel jolted back up, only to slouch back in regret. "On second thought..."
"It would be incredibly stupid to allow you to stroll out of here in the condition you're in right now. There are still tests I have to run to make sure there isn't any residual DT in your body. I will send a notification to the Royal Family, and in the meantime, you'd better keep yourself in line. I'd rather not have to babysit you for another month," she stated bluntly before turning away and returning to her lab bench.
"Hah... what have I gotten myself into," he growled in frustration, which quickly devolved into incoherent muttering.
He turned his head towards Alphys, who was going over the notes she took on the DT, and sighed.
"I... I hope you're doing alright down there..." he mumbled to himself.
