An Unfinished Requiem

A slow beeping woke Y/n from his slumber. Its sharp and repetitive thrumming stabbed at his skull like a sewing needle. He lifted his head, only to see an unwavering darkness around him. Pain shot up his neck, the sudden movement jarring his stiff and sedentary muscles.

"Where am I?"

He raised his hand to massage away the pain pestering his neck. The steady beeping continued in the darkness, its origin impossible to discern. Y/n moved his head around trying to regain motion. After a few cracks, he slinked back into the chair and sighed. Looking around again, Y/n was further perplexed. The ceiling tiles and lights were perfectly visible, but the light emitted by those long fluorescent tubes seemed to rapidly dissipate into a dense black fog.

He took a glance at the floor; it was also visible, aquamarine and white ceramic tiles alternated endlessly into the distance to both his left and right. Y/n stood up from his chair, the darkness before him still blotting out his vision like ink on a page. Suddenly, his vision blurred and the strength in his legs vanished. Taking shallow breaths in, Y/n staggered forward. The chair he was sitting on disappeared into the fog behind him, the beeping growing louder with every step.

It's going to be okay Y/n, I'll make it through this rough patch just fine. No sickness has ever been able to best me in the past, what's the difference with this one?

Another wave of nausea slammed into him, bringing Y/n onto his knees. He brought his hand to cover his mouth and nose, the smell of antibacterial spray slowly filling the air. His heart thumped again and again against his ribcage as if trying to escape from his body. The beeping kept digging into his head, a wave of pain ripping by with every electronic pulse. Gritting his teeth, Y/n pushed himself up from the ground, his legs threatening to give way with every strained second. As if following Y/n's own heartbeat, the beeps in the darkness began to lose their continuous rhythm.

With trembling steps, Y/n continued forward with a hand over his face. The erratic beeping slowly became a chaotic series of shrill pulsings. A sickening fit of coughing threaded between the head-splitting ringing.

I... I'm fine. It's nothing but a little cough. I'll be all patched up by the end of the week. Don't worry, we'll be able to see Rose together, I promise.

Y/n collapsed to the ground, his stomach twisting and folding in upon itself. He clasped his hands over his ears, the sounds around him unyielding. The sporadic beeping sped up, overlapping over itself as Y/n squirmed on the ground. He strained hard to move, but his body refused to listen. Every part of him was screaming for the wailing in the background to stop, for the pain to stop. The only thing he could see was the metal stilts of a hospital bed.

Then, as if something felt the tiniest smidge of pity for Y/n, everything ceased. The cacophony of noise smashing into his skull, the stabbing scent of sanitizer, and the fog of darkness. Grass flowed calmly beneath him, sunlight warming his back.

Hey... are you alright?

"Huh? Who..."

Y/n, have you been getting enough sleep lately? You've been blanking out a lot, I can't help but feel worried.

"I..."

It's okay Y/n, you can trust me with your secrets. That's what friends are for, right?

Y/n quivered, his body still refusing to listen to him. He wanted desperately to turn over, to take a glance at her face one last time. But he couldn't, his body wouldn't let him, and he knows it never will. He let his body slacken. There was no reason to keep struggling; he already knew how this would end. It would be like trying to scream into a void without a mouth to scream with.
