"This looks so boring! Papa, why can't we go do something else?"

"Haha, my dear little girl, this game is anything but boring. 64 squares, and 32 pieces. This is chess, a game that has near-limitless possibilities. It's a brilliant dance of coordination, foresight, and sacrifices. Each individual piece has its value and plays a specific role in the game. It's a constant back and forth where the tide of the game can change instantaneously, and a single misstep can lead to the ruinations of your defenses."

"I don't buy it. Can we go and play with Mrs. Toriel instead?"

"Chara, keep your wings tucked while we're inside. Mrs. Toriel is currently busy with something important, and it's best we don't disturb her. Besides, one game won't hurt you, right?"

"Mmm, I don't know..."

"How about this, you beat me at chess, and I'll bring you to see our lead scientist and have him put on a magic show for you, how does that sound?"

"Ooo, okay Papa, let's go! I'll beat you in a flash!"

"Come on now, you don't even know how the pieces move. How do you plan on winning?"

"Just show me how they move, duh. I'll get it in no time."

"It's not just about the moves either. There are also some rules you need to know before playing."

"Yeah, yeah. Stop stalling and show me already."

"Okay, since you're so eager to learn."

/

"You got all of that?"

"Yup, horsies move in an L shape, hat guys move in an X, the towers zip around in a plus, the king can move to a square that it is touching and can do the swapping thing with the towers, and the queen has the powers of both the hat guys and the towers."

"You're missing one, dear."

"Oh yeah, and the shorties. They're not even that strong, why are they even in the game?"

"Hah! The 'shorties' as you say, are one of the most important pieces of this game. They are the foundation of your defenses, the front liners to your attacks, and the deciding factors at the closing bows of a match. If even one reaches the end of the board, it can become any one of the stronger pieces."

"Except for the king, right?"

"That's right. There can only be one king, that's the whole reason the two sides are fighting in the first place! Anyway, you get my point, right? Even if you don't, I'm sure you'll be able to see the power these little guys hold."

"Alright, alright. I get it."

"So, how do they move, dear?"

"They can move two squares on their first move, and one square after. If an enemy shortie moves two squares next to one of mine, I can take it as if it only moved one square."

"Very good! I think we are ready to start."

"Finally, you're going down!"

/

"I have to say, you are getting this quite quickly."

"Hmph, again! You got lucky last time..."

"There's no such thing as luck in this game, Chara. Every action made has its consequences, trying to put your mistakes your mistakes on some nebulous entity of luck doesn't feel fair to that entity, no?"

"......"

"We've already been playing for quite a while. I think the Queen has finished her business for the day. How about we play one last game and we visit them after?"

"...Okay. I'm going to win this time!"
