Twenty paces. That was the distance between Y/n and Chara at the start of every match. Normally it would take a regular person at least a couple of seconds to close the gap, but with how she could blip out of view in the blink of an eye, that moment of planning couldn't be guaranteed. Luckily for Y/n, she varied the speed of her approach with every match. It was most likely a way to keep Y/n on his toes, but it also kept her from blitzing him every round. Though, even despite the fact that she wasn't trying to put him in the dirt, many of her attacks rendered his options to a matter of instinct.
A gentle wind flowed past the two, ruffling the petals on the ground as it went by. Those petals wobbled up and down like spectators in a colosseum chanting for action. The sun was only a few arclengths above the horizon, yet still raining down rays as if it never tires. Clouds lazily strolled across the sky, slightly covering the total magnitude of those aforementioned rays. Y/n stared at Chara, waiting for her to make a move. Her sharp gaze cut across the short distance between them, eyeing Y/n for any lapses of focus. Her hair swayed as she stood there, as if in anticipation of what was to come.
'Just take your time and breathe,' Y/n thought to himself. The goal was the same as always: to land a sufficient blow on Chara before getting knocked down himself. He can afford a few mistakes, but as she said, they'll quickly become untenable if Y/n allows too many.
'So how am I supposed to do this?'
Y/n was decently confident that she was right-handed. She tends to grapple and counter with that arm and block with her left. It's definitely something, but Y/n doubted that it would be something he could take advantage of. Neither strength nor agility was a viable option to lean into, since he is heavily outclassed in both. All he can do is keep moving and wait for a good opening, that is, if Chara wasn't just messing with him. Were the match to be a no-holds-barred fight, he would be instantly steamrolled.
'Focus.'
At that moment, it was as if the whole world was at a standstill. The quiet winds, the rosy petals, the energetic grass, everything was collectively holding its breath, awaiting the first impact. Then, like a match struck across a coarse surface, the flame of battle ignited. Chara sprinted across the gap, clearing it in a matter of seconds. It was still slow enough for Y/n to react, but certainly far beyond what an average person was capable of.
Her first strike was a jab aimed straight at his face. A block was possible, Y/n could try to hold it back with both his hands assuming that she didn't put too much force behind it, but even if he managed to do that, it would leave far too many openings for Chara to take advantage of. She had led with the right hand, leaving her left free for a follow-up. Even taking the risk of blocking with one hand would still compromise his vision of her movements.
Y/n quickly hopped back a few steps to get out of her effective range, which elicited an approving nod. Without a word, she closed the gap again. It was clear that she had started lightly. That one jab must have been a test to see if he was even paying attention, since there was no other reason why she couldn't have kept applying pressure.
Another jab at his face, this time with her left. Y/n repeated the same motion of evading backwards while trying to be careful with his footing. As expected, Chara didn't let up. She stepped forward with his retreat and launched a right hook at his jaw. Y/n raised his flexed arm to his face to intercept the hit. He managed to block the attack, or at least he would have, if she hadn't adjusted her punch into a grab mid swing. She grabbed his wrist and dragged it down with little to no effort, letting go close enough to her own body so that her returning swing would carry more force behind it.
This time she was aiming for his ribs, with Y/n being caught off guard by her grab, he had to rely on instinct to react in time. As his precious seconds were ticking away, he reached across with his right hand to deflect her upward swing. Though his defense worked, it had forced him into a position where he had two left arms, giving Chara a chance to try and get a shot in with her left. Seeing the left coming, Y/n ducked down to evade the shot and buy some time to fix the predicament he has with his knotted arms. With a small push, Y/n slipped to the right, rolling over his right shoulder, and getting up messily.
