Setting the Pace

Chara jolted awake to the muffled sound of a pot hitting the ground. Hazily, she pushed herself upright, her eyes darting to the analogue clock sitting atop the nightstand beside her bed. 6:50 A.M. Six-fucking-fifty A.M. Then came a panicked bout of movement quickly followed by another CLANG. A flurry of poorly stifled curses rippled through the air, pulling Chara out of her bed in annoyance.

Either this was the most incompetent thief that has ever broken into a house, or it was that idiot Y/n deciding that seven in the morning was a great time to be doing whatever the fuck he was doing. Chara stepped down the stairs, haphazardly combing through her hair with her lazy fingers. Turning around the bend of the stairs and going through the short hallway revealed that it was in fact, Y/n.

"Aren't you up early?" Chara asked, her tone betraying the casual question.

"Uhh... yeah. Did I wake you up?"

"Well if the first time you dropped that damned pot didn't, the second time sure would have," she said accusingly.

"Who said it was me? Maybe it was some tresspa— I'm still holding the pot aren't I?"

    "Yup."

"Shit," Y/n groaned, placing the pot back on the burner grate.

"So are you going to explain why you of all people would be up this early in the morning?"

"It's nothing. The couch was uncomfortable, and—"

"Nice bullshit. Do you really want to keep slinging it around?"

"Ughh, I was trying to put the pot back after washing it and it just slipped out of my hands. You happy?"

Chara raised an unwavering eyebrow.

"Christ, I wanted to go out on a run, okay?"

"That's what you're slinking around like a criminal for?" Chara replied with a snort.

"I was obviously trying to stay quiet—"

"Nice job with that," she remarked.

"— So I wouldn't wake you up."

"Well if you were just going on a run, why would you need to go through all this trouble?" Chara questioned with a quick nod towards the clock embedded in the oven.

"I was trying to improve my stamina, not get run over by a freak of nature."

"... Thanks?"

"Yeah, don't pat yourself on the back too hard. And please, don't kill someone by the time I get back."

"Who says I'm staying here?"

"I says? Besides, it won't take too long."

"Relax, I won't run you over. Just imagine me as a ghost trailing you."

"Not in the slightest bit reassuring."

"How about a ghost right next to you?"

"You know, I'd prefer no ghosts haunting me at all," Y/n responded as he casually strolled towards the door.

"Then let it be a formal request from the royal family," Chara splurted out.

"Oh? If it's a direct request from the princess herself, then I guess there is no other choice but to fulfill it," Y/n agreed playfully, even going as far as to open the door for Chara with a dramatic bow.

"Tch... just walk through the door normally, you bumbling buffoon."

"You sure have a way with words," Y/n sighed.
