[Asriel]

Asriel trudged his way towards the frontline of sector twenty-three B. The sustained breach in that sector had lasted longer than expected, and backup was requested via the infirmaries' comms. In hindsight, that request was most likely made for medics, but every damned moment in that blinding white place whittled away at his sanity. A second longer, and he might have smashed his head in against one of those ivory walls. At least then there would be some semblance of intrigue.

It was always so quiet in the breached sectors, enough to make Asriel's footsteps sound like they echoed. Houses stood tall and moody, appliances lacked their innate hum, and books left half-read on the ground. An empty silence blanketed the place like a dense fog, displacing any wandering spirits from overstaying their welcome. There were so many abandoned sectors like this, hollow and hopeless. It was like staring into the pristine shells of once-thriving mollusks. It didn't help that nobody except highly trained royal guards was allowed in.

The first action taken when a rift is spotted is immediate evacuation. You couldn't bring along personal belongings, just yourself and whoever you might find along the way. The Thoughtless were known not to mess with anything that was left behind, so it would be best to get yourself to safety. It was also said that life would be able to resume in breached sectors once the issue is resolved, but They have persisted despite all measures. Without knowing what was behind the rifts opening in the first place, settling back in the sector would be risky at best. Resettlement could quickly result in tragedy if a closed rift ever decided to reopen.

The frontlines of sector twenty-three B were no different from the residential areas that Asriel had passed through, just a bit less populated. Other than that, there wasn't much that distinguished the two areas. That is, if not for the array of dark portals that nobody dared to look into, much less enter.

Asriel walked up to one of the rifts, staring into the murky spirals, the mere sight of which sent chills up his back. An alluring whisper wormed its way into the back of his mind, urging him to take a step into the abyss. He took a step towards it, reaching out with his hand. Then a shudder raced up his body, snapping him out of his daze. Asriel shook his head and backed away from the rift. He needed to keep his guard up.

"What the hell was I thinking? Even if I managed to get out unscathed, Alphys would never let me hear the end of it," Asriel muttered to himself.

"Hm..."

It is strange... it shouldn't be this quiet on the frontlines. Where is everyone else?

Asriel turned around and began to backtrack. Usually, there are multiple guards patrolling around for any stray Thoughtless or looking for new rifts, but here it's oddly silent. Asriel's stomach sank at the possibility that the guards stationed there had been fully wiped out. That must have been why there was a call for reinforcements. No, that can't be right. This place would have been teeming with those things if that were the case. Maybe they're hiding somewhere...

Asriel looked around, surveying his surroundings for possible places The Thoughtless could have hidden. Normally the Thoughtless have shown themselves to be incapable of higher-level strategy, but according to Alphys, apparently they've developed some form of coordination during the time he was out of commission.

Just as he was thinking about Thoughtless concealing themselves, a flicker of a dark figure crossed the corner of his eye. He turned, only to spot a Thoughtless diving down from the top of a home straight towards him. His Chaos Sabers began to form in his hand, but Asriel quickly realized it was all too late. By the time he would have raised his arms, that thing would have already devoured him whole. The only chance he had was to dive out of the way.
