Dear students of Advanced Placement Painting and Composition,
As your summer comes to an end, I'd like to remind all of you that the summer assignment will be due the day you return from break. As it is the first piece of 'homework', I will be grading with plenty of leniency. That doesn't mean you can randomly slap some paint on the canvas and call it day. Effort and intention are fundamental paradigms that this class necessitates, and so I expect those to be present within every piece you create. That includes this 5-point homework assignment.
I'm sure some of you are already rolling your eyes at this email because you've finished your painting back in June, but late submissions seem to be a common occurrence in the history of this course. I've heard every single reason for a late submission, some more times than I'd ever want to. So, instead of having to listen to 'I was in the Bahamas' for the umpteenth time, I suggest that you start if you haven't already.
Let me remind you that this is a rigorous course. The details of this piece were posted before summer vacation even started, so it really shouldn't have taken until now for you to start sending me frantic requests for extensions. If you have a genuine reason as to why you need more time, I am happy to hear you out. Otherwise, the penalty for not having it ready on time is a 2-point deduction, even if you've created a modern-day Mona Lisa.
That being said, I hope you're as excited for this class as I am. The opportunity to show students places where they can improve will always be my highest honor. I hope your enthusiasm to discover new ways to express yourself matches my desire to show you all that I've accrued over my life.
Sincerely, Professor V.
"Shit," Y/n cursed to himself as he scrolled down the lengthy e-mail. All it really amounted to was 'if you haven't started yet, you're fucked'.
"What's got you singing profanities?" Chara asked. She was lounging on the couch, flipping through channels on the TV. Y/n had shown her how the remote worked and the different shows there were, but she didn't seem interested in any. It looked like Chara was more captivated by the act of changing channels than by what they were showing. Though despite the simplicity of the motion, it seemed to be reason enough to commandeer the flatscreen all to herself.
"I completely forgot that I had a big assignment due a week from now," Y/n said with a click of his tongue.
"How convenient, I'm guessing you'll be too busy to do anything else?" She hummed.
"Come on, give me a break. I need to get this done," he stated bluntly.
"Hm... okay."
Y/n paused. He was expecting pushback, some eyerolling, or even agreement under outlandish conditions. A simple and straightforward response was surprising, if not suspicious.
"Buuuuut?..." Y/n sounded out with a raised eyebrow.
"No buts. Just go do what you need to do," she dismissed with a roll of her eyes.
"Really?"
"Yes, really. You'll be able to focus better later on if you've gotten all these errands done. Now go before I change my mind."
Y/n did not need another reminder. He quickly slipped into the basement, where he struggled with the chain connected to the lightbulb again, to gather his supplies. After a couple of minutes, he appeared back in the kitchen with a cardboard box filled with art supplies he had bought at the beginning of the summer. Carefully navigating through the kitchen, Y/n carried the box over to the short table in the living room. Seeing the box full of paints and brushes, Chara froze for a moment, then she shut the TV off, shifting herself towards Y/n, who was setting out all the materials.
