Unlikely Coincidence

August 29th, 20xx. 7:49 AM.

Sunlight glimmered past the drawn blinds, drawing thin lines across the living room. Y/n was still sound asleep, sprawled out on the couch in a ridiculous manner. His body was half dangling off the edge and half barely holding on. He had called in to work yesterday, hoping it would be a calm shift so that he could conserve energy for the storm coming. Despite his wishful thinking, he still had the misfortune of having to deal with a few headstrong customers who kept insisting they were right. Needless to say, he collapsed onto the couch after taking a shower and promptly drifted off.

Chara stood before Y/n's teetering body with her arms crossed. The edge of her lips curled down slightly as she debated letting gravity wake Y/n up versus waking him up herself. Then again, she has been waiting for 20 or so minutes already, and yet Y/n was still somehow balancing on the ledge of the couch through a combination of friction and pure luck. She could be here, tapping her feet for the rest of the day, and he still could be snoring away, unaware of the precarious situation he was in. Perhaps all he needed was a little nudge...

"Hey Y/n, wake up," she said.

Nothing, not even the slightest stirring from Y/n, which only seemed to agitate Chara even more.

"Y/n..." She repeated slightly louder.

Nothing yet again.

"Y/n!" Chara yelled, her voice quickly filling the room. Y/n jolted awake, his sudden movement pushing his perilous equilibrium past its stable balancing point. Gravity was finally given the leg up in this battle and pulled Y/n down with the full force of its wrath. He reached out for some sort of handhold, but there was nothing, just this lethal glare from Chara as he tumbled to the floor. Not even a drop of remorse was spared in those dark red eyes.

Y/n's back slammed against the ground with a loud thump. He muttered a curse under his breath, then pushed himself up to a sitting position.

"Chara, what the hell was that!? Out of the multitudes of options you have to wake someone up, how in the world did you manage to choose the worst possible option?" Y/n complained.

"I can think of worse. A lot worse actually."

"That's not the point! I— ugh... never mind. Why did you wake me up this early?"

"We have important training today, and I've already stood here waiting for you for far too long," Chara stated bluntly.

"Really? That's what you woke me up over? Jesus... I came home at like 11 PM last night! Why do you even care so much about training anyway?"

"Did you forget what happened last time with those masked people? And what about the deteriorating safety of this town? I thought we agreed that you needed to learn how to defend yourself," Chara replied, her voice rising slightly.

"Not every day! I can't go out if my body is still sore from the day prior, especially not if I had to take a shift to make up for the clothes we bought yesterday."

"Do you think the people who want to hurt you will give a shit if you're tired or not? Do you think they'll spare you any mercy while you're collapsed on your arms and knees? Tell me, Y/n, in a world where there are people who will stop at nothing to take your life, do you really think they'll hesitate when it comes time to drive an axe into your bloody chest?" She hissed, her eyes glimmering with memories of the past.

"That's not going to happen!"

"What if it does! We can argue the semantics all you want, but we both know that those people in the spiral masks aren't some hooligans messing around. They were organized and clearly had a plan to target and isolate you. I can take care of myself just fine if you end up dead, but what about the people you care about? Your friends? How would they react? How about your mother? What then? Does your safety mean nothing to you?"
