???
It was nearing dusk, the remaining sunlight fading quickly. A woman stared intently into the bathroom mirror. Her hands were planted on the marble sink before her. Cold water slowly ran down her face as her grip tightened against the marble countertop. Her teal eyes reflect a glare with the same intensity back at her. It was like her reflection was passing judgment upon the actions she had taken in her life.
She slammed her fist into the mirror, fractures spread instantly through the mirror, shards and flakes breaking off and dropping to the countertop. Blood began flowing from the woman's fists, staining the glass in a deep crimson. Her sharp breaths scratched horribly against the silence. Pain signals flashed loudly in her mind. The broken glass dug into her skin and scrapped against the bones in her hand.
"That's more like it," she growled. The woman pulled her hand away from the shattered and bloodied mirror, her reflection now a horrid recreation of herself. She quickly steadied her breathing, examining her fist as blood dripped down her arm. Shards of glass were still stuck in her hand, which was screaming at her to fix the issue. She grabbed a pair of tweezers and carefully picked and dug the translucent pieces out of her flesh, grinding her teeth as she pulled the pieces out.
After a grueling search, the woman washed away the blood and tightly wrapped up her fist in some gauze. She flexed her fingers, closing and opening her hand in a jerky manner until she felt the pain going away, or perhaps it was just her getting used to it.
The doorbell rang loudly, disrupting her moment of tranquility. The woman visibly tensed up; nobody should have known that she was here. Nevertheless, it wasn't the first time she had to deal with unwelcome guests. She quickly finishes tending to her hand, tying up the gauze in a swift and experienced motion. She gave one last look at the bloodied mirror... and smiled.
She rushed over to the apartment door, giving it a series of knocks in a futile folly.
Nothing came in response.
The woman sighed, twisting the doorknob in a fit of frustration.
"May I help you?" she snarled, her eyes flashing dangerously.
"That depends, Shadow of Death. What are you really capable of?" asked the man wearing a dark cloak, the hood casting such a deep shadow across the man's face that it was barely visible.
Her posture straightens instantly and the woman's eyes narrow.
"What are you talking about?" she asks in fieght ignorance.
"Come on now, let's not play cat and mouse. I believe that we both know exactly what I'm speaking of," the man replied with a wispy laugh.
"Then you should have known that you never should have come here," she threatened.
"How amusing. Now before you do anything rash, I believe that there's a far better way of handling this. I have something I want, and you do as well. This leads me to think we can... arrive at a compromise," the man purred.
"Unlikely. I suggest you leave, or else you'll discover the meaning behind the name you have linked to me."
"Lying to yourself again? I wouldn't have taken you as someone who would do such a thing. Then again, humanity has always been this way, hasn't it? It would be insanity to believe otherwise."
