[Chara]
The sound of cookware scraping carelessly against the stovetop coils snapped Chara awake. She groggily blinked a few times at the ceiling, wondering if she was still dreaming or not. After a minute, she pushed herself out of bed. It was 9:03 A.M., a bit earlier than what she was used to expecting, but for the past week, Y/n had been waking up sooner normal to get ready for the morning shift he had picked up. After which, he would promptly collapse on the couch for an hour, then drag himself off for the night shift.
He claimed it was necessary because government funds wouldn't last long, especially with them split between two people instead of one. Chara didn't buy a single word of it. Not only because he couldn't meet her eyes when he said it, but also because she had insisted that he only cook for himself if the money was tight, which he rejected without so much as a passing thought. However, the idiot failed to recognize that she would skip the lunch she was supposed to prepare for herself while he was away.
When Chara reached the marbled dining table, she noticed that although hers was no different from before, Y/n's plate was filled with scrambled eggs instead of sunny-side-up, the version he had so adamantly touted as superior to all other ways of cooking an egg. He aimlessly poked and prodded at the eggs, only lifting his head for a tired 'good morning' when Chara pulled her chair out.
"Hey. What's with the scrambled eggs?"
"Oh you know, trying something new," he said, continuing to push the little chunks around.
"Uh-huh, sure. Work?"
"Yeah. Sorry if I woke you up," Y/n apologized.
"It's whatever. I don't feel any different in any case. But working? Again?"
"Last day, I promise," he dismissed.
"You said that yesterday, and the day before," she hummed in frustration.
"Chara, I've already told you why I have to—"
" Three days a week with only one shift per day. That was before all this happened. Do you want to take a wild guess at how many times you've gone to work this week?"
"Uh—"
"Eleven times! Even assuming that I am twice the financial burden you claim I am, you are still several days over," She angrily pointed out with a loud slam of her hand against the veined table. The small pebbles of eggs on Y/n's plate trembled.
"But—"
"And you're going today too! I—"
Chara took a deep breath in and exhaled, her eyebrows furrowed.
"I'm worried you're overworking yourself," she explained, her sharp brown eyes staring at him intently.
"I'll be fine, I've done nine-ten shifts a week before, and I feel perfectly—"
"Skies above, have you seen yourself in a fucking mirror?" Chara quickly interrupted.
"...Touché, but that doesn't change the fact that I've already called in to work today," Y/n countered.
"Why are you doing all this, Y/n?"
Y/n could feel sweat beading up on his back. The ferocity of her question made it feel like he was being interrogated under a singular light bulb in a dark room.
