Chapter one hundred and sixteen
"It all becomes too much."
On the side of a wall with rectangular windows, Scarlett stood with six other people holding pokers and wearing shields over their faces, some of them banged their pokers against the wall "every assignment leads you closer to enjoying the benefits of becoming a citizen of the civic republic." a woman's voice said over the speakers, as a gate opened on the other side of the wall, a truck could be heard, as Scarlett turned looking at it, watching it drive by and bring walkers forward, from where she wasn't quite sure if this place was supposed to be as safe as they said.
Looking to her right on the wall, Grimes sixty eight, was written and that reminded her of why she was standing here, as a walker growled, she turned to the window, seeing it walking toward's her, she brought up the poker and stabbed it in the head, pulling it out, there was another behind it, as she stabbed it, thinking of the whisperers, she continued killing them.
Where once they were dead, they were in charge of loading them up, as Scarlett was back there with one of the other woman, picking the body up and putting on these metal gurneys "good work out there. We're two hours to transport to Richmond power station." the woman said over the speakers, as the woman she was with helped lift the body "you cut through them quick. You out there a while?" she asked, as they moved it toward's the metal shelf "it's the only way you stay alive. How about you?" Scarlett asked "yeah. Cleo. Cleo Clifton." Cleo introduced.
"Sarah Dixon. Didn't expect them to have us killing their dead for them." Scarlett shared "doorstep of paradise." Cleo told her "well my husband, preferred being out their so I wouldn't exactly call this paradise." Scarlett shared "well, before this, I was eating crickets and sleeping in a tree." Cleo shared, as an explosion happened, Scarlett jumped, being reminded of the night Carl died "oh. Disruption charges. They drop them to scatter the stiffs, if too many build up in one area. Second time this week." Cleo shared, walking over to the bodies.
"Yeah, my, um..my oldest son died while bombs were going off in the distance so it just bothers me." Scarlett shared "I'm sorry. So, what are you? Three day or six day?" Cleo asked "what do you think?" Scarlett asked "three. I'm just happy to be with someone new who knows their shit." Cleo shared "husband was a hunter. Like to shoot first, ask questions later type." Scarlett shared, as Cleo laughed, using her poker to roll down another body, the walkers underneath it were still alive.
"Heads up, we got nonkills. Nonkills." a man shared, as the walkers got up, Scarlett grabbed her poker "consignees, clear!" the man voiced, as soldiers were coming in, Scarlett walked forward and stabbed the walker coming toward's her in the head, looking to Cleo one was coming up behind her "duck!" she voiced, as Cleo did so, Scarlett swung the poker into the walkers head, killing it, the soldiers walked up behind her "good work. Good work." could be heard, as Cleo laughed "yeah. Your husband taught you well." she shared, as the soldiers walked off "consignees, clear orange for station assessment. Consignees Dixon and Clifton, return to transport for health check and incident report." a woman said over the speakers.
Scarlett and Cleo started walking off "all right, consignees, let's get em clear." the man who was watching over them told the one's who were left, Rick was standing there looking at her, as Scarlett walked past him like she didn't know him, Rick turned watching her go, before looking back at t the consignees, seeing Thorne talking with one of the soldiers about what happened here.
Where that night, Scarlett was awake staring at the ceiling, but as an explosion went off in the distance, she quickly got out of bed, breathing heavy, another explosion followed, and she remembered holding Carl who was dying in her arms in that sewer, she ran her hands through her hair, breathing heavy, another explosion came, she remembered pulling the trigger and killing him, she was now sitting in the corner of the room with her knees pulled into her chest and her hands over her ears.
