Chapter one hundred and nineteen
"A lifetime waiting for us after."
Flying back to the CRM base, they secretly occupy an empty quarters to finalize their strategy. On the table lies a handwritten outline of the plan: they will walk onto the tarmac together to maintain their cover story. While Scarlett is escorted directly to General Beale, Rick will use the diversion to infiltrate the archives and retrieve the hidden file on Alexandria.
Next to the papers sit two glasses and the bottle of liquor salvaged from the cabin. Flickering candles illuminate the room, casting long shadows against the concrete walls. Their clothes are tossed onto the floor, and their weapons remain within arm's reach of the mattress where they lie together, finding a final moment of intimacy before launching their mission.
When they are ready, they pull their CRM uniforms back on and make their way through the dense woods toward the base perimeter. Just before they reach the edge of the tree line, Rick takes Scarlett's hand, pulls her close, and kisses her one last time. Scarlett kisses him back fiercely. Breaking apart, they step out of the forest and onto the open road, marching directly toward the heavily fortified main gate.
The guards instantly raise their rifles, shouting orders. Rick and Scarlett lift their hands in mock surrender. Recognizing them, the front gate guards trigger the security mechanism, and the heavy metal barriers groan open. They step inside the compound, where a tactical team immediately steps in, separating them according to their plan.
Rick is escorted straight to a secure room for his official incident debrief. After answering the panel's questions, he steps out into the adjacent corridor. Pearl Thorne stands at the end of the hall, her back to a large glass window. Hearing his boots, she turns around and lets out a breathless, disbelieving laugh.
"You're really here," Thorne says, shaking her head. "Now that you've given them the official debrief... tell me what really happened out there."
"There was severe turbulence," Rick lies smoothly, keeping his voice entirely steady. "We went low to try and get out of it, but the aircraft was struck by lightning. We were going down fast over open water. Scarlett panicked, grabbed me, and tackled us both right out of the cargo door. She saved my life. So... thank you for bringing her onto the team."
Thorne stares at him, her expression hardening. "No, Rick. You brought her in."
"Why don't we just say it was Okafor?" Rick suggests quietly, stepping closer. "That we were both just doing what he started, keeping his mission going."
Thorne turns on her heel and begins walking down the corridor. Rick falls into step beside her.
"I used to think that giving up meant a lack of character, a weak will," Thorne shares, her voice echoing in the concrete hall. "But you and I... we both had to give up so much just to stand here today. I've realized that sometimes, giving up can actually be a sign of strength. It's a commitment to something much bigger than yourself. Giving up is what made me realize what we are truly trying to build here. Hopefully, you'll eventually understand that too."
Rick looks straight ahead, playing his part perfectly. "I want to."
"I'm glad you made it back, Rick. Even more so with Scarlett," Thorne shares, stepping directly into his path to block the hallway. "Because you are needed out here, but not nearly as much as she is. It is up to us now... but not in the way Okafor thought."
She starts to elaborate, "Okafor, he..." She cuts herself off as a pair of patrolling soldiers pass by their position, letting out a sharp sigh before continuing. "He was never really here. Not in the way he should have been. That's exactly why he died. But you lived. I lived. And it's all because of her. We are meant to be a part of this future, Rick. It's time to let go of the past."
