***30 minutes later***
''Here you go, babe'' I say to Sophie softly as I sit down beside her with two big glasses of red wine in my hands.
We got home about 15 minutes later. We didn't say anything to anybody when we were leaving although Sophie did text her boss, saying that she was not feeling the very best and that she would be heading home. He replied saying that it wasn't a problem and that he hoped she would be better soon as they had a busy few weeks coming up in the company with some very big potential clients in the pipeline.
She also text Cara, the girl who I recognized, and told her what was happening. Cara had pretty much replied in the same manner as Sophie's boss; wishing her a speedy recovering and that there would be a pile of shit on her desk if she wasn't in to tackle it tomorrow.
''You okay, sweetie?'' I ask her after a few more minutes of silence fall over us.
I take a sip from my glass of wine before placing the glass back on to the coffee table here in my lounge. She stays silent for a few moments before slowly, very slowly nodding her head in response to my question. She continues to play with fingers they wrap themselves around the base of the wine glass. It immediately spikes my concern, the fact that she won't say anything. I mean, it is obvious that something is bothering her and I have no idea what it is, but no matter what it is, whether it is something big or small, I will be there for her 100% for whatever reason and whenever she needs me.
It has to be something substantial to make us leave the company event after only 25 minutes after she basically begged and pleaded to get me t come with her. Then when she said that she didn't want to go to a work thing with me before everyone knew about us, I told her that she would have to get used to it sooner rather than later, because I am never letting her go and so she is stuck with me! She did manage to chuckle at me when I said that to her which brings a small smile to my face before I snap back from my semi-day dream as I realize where I am and what I'm doing.
When it registers again with me that she still hasn't uttered more than a mere syllable since we passed through the doors of my house only 20 minutes ago.
''Soph..'' I manage to push out in what is almost half a sigh and half a plea for some answers.
''Babe, I don't know what's wrong and I am not going to push for an answer or anything like that but if you could just...'' I tail off as I raise a hand to my stubble covered cheek and give it a light scratch as I search for the words for what I want to say.
I mean, it would help if I knew what I wanted to say and then searching for the correct words would be any easier task but sure here I am.
''I only want to help you and you know I would never force you to tell me anything at all, yeah? But please know that I am always here for you, Sophie'' I whisper out the final few syllables before wrapping my arm around the top of her shoulders and pull her close to my chest.
I feel her exhale against the thin material of my dress shirt as we snuggle down on the sofa after an eventful evening to say the very least. I fight to keep my eyes from closing after all the madness and tears that were spilled tonight but I just can't seem to keep my eyelids from edging closer to each other and before I know it, the darkness of sleep consumes my surroundings.
*****
I struggle to focus my vision properly as they adjust to the darkness of the lounge. 'What time is it?' I ask myself in my head as I fumble around on the settee for my phone. After a few minutes of tiredly roaming my hand across the dark leather of the sofa, I finally manage to locate my iPhone which managed to bury itself in the wedge between the two cushions.
