Chapter 20: A deserved rest

Beat and Erina went to a cafeteria filled with people and Beat ordered a cappuccino and Erina an apple juice. Beat started drinking his cappuccino while looking how the people were talking of their own things so happily and smiling. He was worried for Erina, she has discovered a lot of things in one day and few happy.
-Beat: Ignorance is such a blessing... If they knew what we had to do today, Erina, they would be closed in their houses.
-Erina: Yeah, I know. But better this way, no? If they work and pay, this city goes well. It's how society works. And it's our job and the police job to protect them from murderers, kidnappers and who knows what more.
-Beat: Indeed. Without the monster hunters, we would have a war instead of a peace.
-Erina: Are you worried for what happened?
-Beat: I'm that easy to read?
-Erina: No. But I've been attached to you already some time to know when you are worried.
-Beat: Francis being your grandfather... That's a nightmare.
-Erina: Be easy. Nothing will...

Then a lamp of the cafeteria falls and almost hits Erina. That scared Erina and Beat looked to Erina with a calm face.
-Beat: (smiles) Nothing will happen, eh?
-Erina: At least you smiled! That's better!
-Beat: That you have to tell me that would worry Sylvia.
-Erina: Shut up.
-Beat: (laughs) Now who's harsh!?
-Erina: I gained that from you. Still, I don't like eliminating...
-Beat: I know. But well, someday you'll find a way to avoid that. Until then, we capture if we can.
-Erina: About this case of Cynthia...
-Beat: She was a wicked woman and wanted to kill you. She deserved what came next. Also in this case we didn't have many other choices. But you really are a black widow for my friends. Each case I end killing one. At this rate my closest friend will be Vinnie!
-Erina: Not my fault that Adam was one of Cynthia's zombies.
-Beat: Yeah, it was his own fault. But now nothing restrains the best soldiers of the church. Next cases may be crazier than these two.
-Erina: Hardly can be that. A werewolf that was used by an important man to destroy the pills for werewolfves, a succubus that used people's life to become a doctor and return to her nation...
-Beat: And you haven't seen nothing. A silver skeleton that bashes your head, a vampire that had hemophilia and threw blood to your eyes and burns them...
-Erina: Wow.
-Beat: Be used to strange things. A lot.
-Erina: Beat... Is really worth to take a life?
-Beat: Sometimes it is. Thing is that if you even save 4 lifes with one death, you are helping more than hurting. Funny thing is that I even doubt that.
-Erina: Well... maybe you are right or maybe you are wrong.
-Beat: Taking a life is not easy choice at first, believe me when I say that. Not all what I've killed has always been monsters. (Sighs) One time I had to kill my companion, she was the first companion I had, a zombie attacked her, she started turning into a zombie and... She asked me to kill her while... While she was human.
-Erina: It surely was devastating.

Beat didn't answer to that, he couldn't. He wasn't ready to remember how he killed his first companion, the mere thought of remembering how she died made him feel like a murderer. Erina looked at Beat with a worried face and she knew that talking of Beat's past was causing him to remember things he did not want to remember.
-Erina: Beat... I'm so sorry...
-Beat: Hey. Don't take pity or mercy on me. You are my companion, you surely need to know what happened to her. Shall we go back to work?
-Erina: Today, I want to talk with my mother about Francis.
-Beat: Then I shall go with you.
-Erina: It's a family thing.
-Beat: And? Usually I would stay away but with what I know already, better that I go.
-Erina: Okay.
Beat and Erina leave the cafeteria and go to Erina's house.

At Erina's house, Erina's mother was waiting for Erina with a worried face while holding a letter for her. Erina opens the door and Beat enters with Erina.
-Erina's Mother: Hi Erina. How is going the day?
-Erina: Really bad. I met my grandfather. A member of the goverment. Francis.
-Erina's Mother: So that's why he sent me this letter with orders. Erina, I hate to tell you this but...
-Beat: Let me check the letter.
-Erina's Mother: Why?
-Beat: I want to know his orders.
-Erina's Mother: You aren't going to like them.
-Beat: I know.

Erina's mother gives the letter to Beat and he reads it. It said that Erina had to marry with a fat, ugly and rich guy only to preserve the genes and that she would have to stop working as a monster hunter. Beat read it all twice and took a lighter and burned the letter.
-Beat: If he wants that, sorry but nop. That's a no.
-Erina's Mother: Are you crazy!? He's going to be angry with you for that.
-Beat: Erina, you know why I hate Francis and the others of the government so much? Why white hope does not get cases from the government?
-Erina: No.
-Beat: My first companion died in one of those cases. They sent us to die. And in this letter he was doing the same to you. Marrying with a fat rich guy and have kids, that was the order. You know what? I've already lost many companions. I won't lose you too.
-Erina's Mother: He will retaliate.
-Beat: That he retorts all what he wants. I'll kill him if he goes after Erina. That's a declaration. So he must know what I've said. Ok?
-Erina's Mother: Okay. (Smiles) You really are a nice guy, Beat.
-Beat: I've lost already too much people. Not going to let him take one of my people easily.
Erina for a moment was surprised, Beat just decided to destroy a letter with an order for her and that way avoiding a marriage that would be unhappy for her.

Beat has shown a little of his past but nothing more. What more has happened to Beat to make him like that? Who knows!
