Chapter 24: The threads of the spectra

Vinnie arrived to the manor with a computer and sat in a chair. He was surprised that someone else could enter in these cameras. He was the only one that made it until now, so it was like a challenge to find who hacked the cameras and find the one that did it. So he started looking for a breach in the security system and he found a backdoor made by the own creators of the security cameras. It wasn't common in this type of cameras to have that backdoor so it was custom made by the creators of those cameras.
-Vinnie: “Why they did that? It was like letting the kidnapper win the fight even before planning... Beat must know something."

Vinnie looked for Beat and found him.
-Vinnie: Beat. Why the creators of the cameras made a backdoor for this house?
-Beat: It is so strange?
-Vinnie: Yes! The hacker used it! That's for sure. With such backdoor, it was hard.
-Beat: Then it may be that the spectra has taken control of the creators of thise cameras.
-Vinnie: (Surprised) WE ARE FIGHTING A SPECTRA!? That type of monsters aren't only fairy tales?
-Beat: No. They aren't. Unfortunately, a spectra is controlling a skeleton and has kidnapped Iris, an...
-Vinnie: Wait, Iris Dandelion? The pacifist girl that made songs of peace and keeps protesting for several things of this government? Someone wants a war.
-Beat: Never better said. Can you find where the spectra is?
-Vinnie: If he has controlled the creators of those cameras... I fear that the backdoor will lead to them.
-Beat: That would mean that he needs a device that made the sound that he uses to control people.
-Vinnie: And that device must be controlled remotely! And I can track it!
-Beat: We need Trish. I need her to start working in countermeasures against that sound. I'll call her.

Beat takes out his phone and calls to Trish.
-Trish: Hi.
-Beat: Trish, I'm Beat. I need countermeasures against sound attacks.
-Trish: To make it 100% effective I need a sample of the sound. Because if you even hear a little the sound, the attack will work.
-Beat: Okay, we're on it. Thanks.
Beat hangs out the phone.
-Beat: Vinnie, check the cameras and grab this sample and give it to Alphonse and Dolly. (Throws a tube with the blood of the skeleton)
-Vinnie: With that, I can know where the spectra usually moves.
-Beat: You think that it can be possible?
-Vinnie: Yeah. If I could take anyone under my control, I wouldn't go after a great guy that could cause me some troubles, I would grab someone that walks near of my house.
-Beat: Also I should talk to Iris father. Maybe someone of the house is controlled by the spectra.

Then a gunshot is heard. Beat went running to see what happened. The butler had shot Iris father in the head and was smiling.
-Butler: Beat. I can't kill you but making your people suffer is a easy job.
-Beat: I won't let you do something more. I'm also a monster and if to avoid a war or saving someone I must choose between killing an innocent or not... Let's say that your luck is over!
Beat took his gun and shot the butler in the head. Erina saw it happening and was about to arrest the butler.
-Erina: Beat! Why you did that!?
-Beat: Don't thank me for saving your life and your freedom. He said it. Making my people suffer. So he was going after you.
Then Erina's father comes with several cops.
-Erina's father: Beat, explain what is happening!
-Beat: An spectra is the culprit. He controls people using sounds. And he controlled that butler to kill Iris father and control Erina. And I killed the butler to avoid the second part.
-Erina's father: Then he must be using a device that makes the sound.
-Beat: I'll check the corpse of that butler.
-Erina's father: I won't let you. Guys find that device.
Two cops grabbed Beat and pushed him far from the corpse, then other two cops checked the body and found a little headphone that was controlled remotely.
-Erina's father: Now to wait the call of the spectra in 3 hours.
-Erina: Did you plant microphones in all the phones of the house?
-Erina's father: I'm not a detective for letting the culprit play by his rules. I know a pair of tricks of my own.
-Beat: (Sighs) You should let me do my job...
-Erina's father: My ass with that! You already killed an innocent.
-Beat: I had to.
-Erina's father: Because maybe that butler would control your companion!? Then just shoot to his legs.
-Beat: I'm not taking any chance. Last time, Erina went alone to a succubus house and was in danger.
-Erina: Beat, I can take care of a butler.
-Beat: (sighs) Say what you want. I'll do my job as I know. Also that butler was culprit of murder. So innocent my ass.
No one could even try to answer that. Everyone knew that Beat was right in that one. Even if the murderer was controlled, he murdered someone and that meant going to jail for sure. Beat did his job, that's true. Stop a murderer that had connection with a monster at any cost and in any way needed.

Erina went to talk with Vinnie to ask why Beat was so overprotective.
-Erina: Vinnie, why Beat decides to kill instead of capturing? And more if I'm in possible danger?
-Vinnie: In all of his life he has lost 15 companions already. Each one worse than the previous one. That makes him think always if he had less mercy he could save his companions. And that means that if he sees that someone can kill his companion while capturing, he will simply kill the monster and forget about capturing. Also by what I know, his family was killed by a monster. Imagine how he feels.
Vinnie leaves Erina thinking.
