Katie was watering her plants as she hummed a song. The bed of dirt stuck out because of the beautiful bright roses, magic radiating off them. She got them as a gift from Persephone, her half sister when she completed a quest to search for a aqua jewelled tulip. As a reward, she got red, white and pink roses.
*Flashback*
"Now Katie. Listen closely. These are no ordinary roses. Each one represents something. The red means love. The pink one means kindness. The white one means honesty and trust. Plant them 4 inches apart on the same bed and give them half a litre of water at exactly 7 in the morning and 5 in the evening for 7 days, starting today. Also, make sure you plant them in this order; red, pink and white from the left to right. After the seventh day, pluck them all." the goddess of springtime instructed.
"Give them to somebody to get these qualities from them before sundown that same day. But be warned, if you do not follow these instructions something bad will happen. These flowers are very delicate. One wrong move and all things in camp would change. Especially in Mom's cabin." Katie nodded.
"Now go before they are intoxicated to the poisonous air!"
*Flashback*
Katie stared into space and jerked her arm back, afraid of giving her precious roses too much water. She stroked the petals of the red rose gently. "Well this is it. The last day." she mumbled to herself. Tomorrow, she would have to pluck them and give them to somebody by sundown. She pondered for a while, thinking who would deserve such beautiful flowers which masked powers beyond reach. A lightbulb lit up in her head. She went to sleep, planning out carefully what she going to do the next morning.
Katie ran out to check her flowers. What she saw shocked her. Where her roses were supposed to be were three dug out holes. She fell to her knees in front of them. Not that she cared for them. Just the camp. She heard footsteps behind her but she paid no mind to them. A hand rested on her shoulder.
"Happy Valentine's Day."
Katie looked up. Covering her from the sun was her boyfriend of 1 year, Travis. In his hands were 3 roses. Katie felt queasy.
"Thanks. But uh, where did you get those from?" she pointed to the flowers wrapped with plastic and tied with a ribbon.
Travis looked at them and said simply, "Took them from your garden. I know you grow the best flowers. Hope you don't mind."
"You just put the whole camp in danger."
He looked momentarily confused. Then he let out a laugh and smacked his forehead.
"I forgot about the whole Persephone thing. Don't worry. A little birdie told me it was fine to pick the flowers. You have gained my love, kindness, honesty and trust."
"How do you know about my meeting with her? And the meanings for the roses?"
Travis smiled mysteriously. "That same little birdie told me."
Katie sighed. "Do you know how worried I was? Do you know much those flowers mean to the existence of this camp? Do you kno-" Travis cut her off with a kiss. "I'm sure that little birdie was right. Don't worry." he said firmly.
"I hate you sometimes, you know."
"And that's why you love me. But I can't really say I hate you." He twirled the flowers. "I've got a promise to keep and I have a feeling I'm sticking to it for a long time."
