"Happy Birthday." Pressing a sweet kiss to his lips I smiled as I handed him the tiny box I'd decided to use for his gift, watching his expression carefully as he began to open it. Ocean eyes widened in surprise and confusion for a second before finally seeming to understand and gave a nod before opening the locket, then they started to flood. Me and Winnie had taken a picture together a week ago and though it wasn't the one I'd picked for the locket, it ended up being to perfect not to use. "Turn it around you big baby." Whispering I placed my hand over his and helped him to turn it around, revealing the few words I'd chosen to be engraved. 'This is the most fun I've ever had'. I was down on the ground before I could even register what had even happened. "You're going to crush me you big idiot." I tried to push him off but gave up within a few seconds to wrap my own arms around him and give a large smile. "Thought it'd be nice."
"I'm having fun too." He whispered as he kissed along my neck and eventually my entire face, causing me to explode into a mess of giggles. "The most fun I never thought I'd have the chance to have." Pressing his lips against mine gently he looked down at me with one of the largest grins I'd ever seen on his face. "Love you, Bear." Rolling my eyes at the old nickname I actually pushed him off this time, dusting myself off as though I hadn't liked it at all and that it'd taken up my precious time. But I knew that he knew better, there was nothing else I'd have rather had done to me. Now that just sounded wrong. "What do you have planned for today? I mean you've already got Winnie running around out in the living room, I can hear her." With a sheepish grin I just shrugged, he wasn't supposed to know that anything was going on, I'd told Winnie to be quiet while she set up shop, but I guess you can't expect that of 7 year olds all the time. They're just kids, they are gonna be loud no matter how hard they might try to be quiet. Taking his hand I slowly led him to the living room. "Please don't get me hurt, Daniel."
"If I've led you this far in life without getting you killed or seriously injured, I don't think it's going to be to hard now." Patting his hand reassuringly I led him into the living room, but I didn't cover his eyes as that /would've/ resulted in an injury, I smiled at the decorations that were strung about the place with confetti on the ground and balloons in the air. I'd helped earlier that morning without waking up Phil, but Winnie had insisted on doing the rest on her own, and I couldn't really say no when she pulled out the puppy dog eyes. "We're going to have a party, just the 3 of us!" Bouncing up and down with my hand still holding onto his I saw his eyes light up and his smile grow. "Come on, we spent awhile setting this all up here."
Pulling him farther in I smiled at the way his eyes sparkled and shone with awe and childlike wonder. "DADDY!" Winnie gave a screech as she tore across the living room and jumped up into his arms, something she hadn't done to either of us in a while. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Me and Papa spent all morning making this for you! Do you like it?" Tugging on his shirt she gave him a large smile and wiggled in his arms, and I really hoped that he liked it, or would be gentle if he accidentally said something bad and then had to fix it quickly. But I knew that I didn't have to worry once that smile grew even larger. "YOU DO LIKE IT! I TOLD YOU!" Pointing at me she stuck out her tongue and giggled as she cling to Phil, who had begun to wobble once Winnie starting moving around. Rolling my eyes for the second time today already I just smiled and told her to shush, playfully of course, she hadn't done anything bad.
"I didn't feel like socializing this year so I decided this was the next best thing." I said with an indifferent tone, smiling as soon as I saw him rolling his own eyes. Punching my arm playfully he grabbed it shortly after and pressed his lips against mine. "Or maybe I just didn't want to share you this year, there I said, you happy now?" Sticking out my tongue, that's probably where Winnie got it from, and looked away from him as if though I'd been found out about a super secret topic. "Now how about we start with cake, or what would the birthday boy prefer?" Looking down at him, funny because I usually slouched to look up at him because I always felt so small compared to him, in more ways than one, and tilted my head curiously.
"Very happy, and yeah, I think I could go for some breakfast cake." Nuzzling his face into my neck from behind I felt myself melting before giving up and taking his hand again, pulling him towards the kitchen. "Did you bake it or did you buy it?" I scoffed with offense, of course I'd bought the cake. I didn't know how to bake. I knew how to cook, but those were two different things entirely. "Right, stupid question. It looks really good though, how about next year you try and bake it?" Jutting out his bottom lip he tried to lure me into agreeing, but I was used to his sort of begging, by now only Winnie's got me to do what she wanted me to. Letting go of his hand again I presented the cake to him properly, it was a light blue with a cream filling. It was sweet, and though in old age he'd kind of gotten over sweets, he still liked them usually.
"Now come on, you've turned 33, I think we need to celebrate you living this long." Teasingly poking at his side I snuck another kiss before dashing away from him to the other side of the table, sitting down beside Winnie who was looking up at Phil with eyes of innocence. I just copied her look. Phil did nothing but roll his eyes and blow out the candles I'd lit earlier, he smiled, "What. What did you wish for?" I knew that he was superstitious, but he'd gotten over that years ago, though it still popped up every now and again. "Come on, tell me you idiot."
Coming over to sit beside us he leaned down and pecked Winnie's forehead before leaving a lasting kiss on my lips. "I wished for this to never end. The best years of my life. To never lose the best people in my life." His voice was a whisper, but I heard every word. "To lose the man that I love, to lose the little girl that we've raised and loved for years. I want this perfect family forever. No matter the bumps in the road we encounter." That was actually a pretty good wish.
