The day had come and Shelby was all packed up for her trip home. John helped her take the suitcases outside because Tommy was still sore from his fight. Tommy walked her out and to the car. He saw she was still wearing his ring and necklace.
"Don't ever take them off." he said.
"Never." she said.
"I'm going to miss you." he said.
"I'm going to miss you, too." she said.
"Don't ever forget me. I love you." he said.
"I love you, too." she said. "And I won't forget you either."
He leaned down and kissed her goodbye. She wanted to cry but she managed to keep her tears from falling. She hugged him but not as tight as she had in the past.
She climbed into the back seat and Tommy closed the door. Her dad went to pull out of the driveway and stopped. She rolled down the window and stuck her head out.
"Hey, see you next summer!"
John and Tommy walked back up to the house to start their watch for Shelby's return.
