CURRENT MEMBERS' HISTORY

Jeon Jeongguk, born September 1st 1997, Busan

Jungkook decided he wanted to become a singer after listening to G-Dragon in 7th grade (around the age of 13). He learnt some b-boying at a club with his friends and auditioned for Superstar K3. However, he was eliminated before making it into the final round. After seeing him on stage, around 8 different companies, including JYP, YG, Woollim, FNC, Starship, TS, Cube and Big Hit Entertainment (allegedly also SM), scouted him for his talents. He couldn't decide until one day he saw a Big Hit trainee at that time, Kim Namjoon, and was amazed by his rapping skills. Golden Maknae or not, he was struggling at first, as almost everyone. When he danced, Bang Sihyuk PD said: "No emotion. No emotion while dancing." So at the age of 14, Jungkook was sent in America to train. He learnt different dance styles, including urban style, powerful dances, female dancing style etc. from famous choreographers. When he returned, he told to his hyungs: "Hyung, the U.S is great. I want to go again." (And as we know, he did. More than once.)

Before joining Big Hit Entertainment, he played handball and did taekwondo (he has a black belt I think). When he was 10, he wanted to be an owner of a duck meat restaurant or a tattooist, then he changed it to a badminton player but in the end started focusing on singing thanks to Jiyong. When he was younger he misbehaved a lot but because of his various talents and skills, the members gave him the nickname Golden Maknae. Bang PD-nim was thinking a lot about his stage name, some of the suggested were Seagull, Young Gun etc., but in the end it was decided that his birth name sounded the best.

Kim Taehyung, born December 30th 1995, Daegu

Taehyung was playing saxophone for three years after being moved by a video of Danny Jung. He just changed from classic saxophone to jazz saxophone when he decided to focus more on dancing and singing. He actually wasn't allowed to audition but he accompanied his friend to the audition after seeing flyers. His friend didn't pass it and the staff convinced Taehyung to try it too. He called his father and received an approval. He didn't have anything prepared in particular so he just sang, danced and performed a skit. He was the only one to pass that year in Daegu. He was one of the members whose identity was hidden until the very debut and on the day of his reveal, 5 fan fanclubs were established by future ARMYs. Although he doesn't come from a wealthy family, his parents support him a lot. If he didn't audition that day, he would probably become a farmer like his father. His stage name was also not clear from the very start - Cis and Rex were considered but he chose to be V instead.

Park Jimin, born October 13th 1995, Busan

Jimin had danced popping since 8th grade but gained interest in this kind of career only after watching Rain's performances. He started attending the modern dance department in Busan High School of Arts. He was rapidly improving his skills and soon became one of the best in his contemporary dance class. He decided to audition after suggestion of his dance teacher. He had support all around him as his friends' reactions to his performance of TVXQ's Mirotic and he said he felt like he could become a celebrity at that time. He was accepted to Big Hit in summer 2012 and was the last addition to BTS. There were many stage names considered, including Baby J, Baby G, Young Kid etc., but it was decided Jimin fits him the most.

Kim Namjoon, born September 12st 1994, Goyang

Namjoon started off as an underground rapper under the name Runch Randa. He has been composing songs since junior high where he would scribble them down in textbooks. Despite his focus on music, he has notable academic achievements. Apart from having IQ of 148, he achieved 850 out of 990 on the TOEIC exams in his junior high. He studied in New Zealand and watched Friends so he can speak English fluently. He got interested in hip hop after listening to Epik High. He was introduced to Big Hit by Sleepy from Untouchable who recommended him to Bang PD-nim for audition. His parents weren't really fond of this idea at first but Namjoon managed to convince them and passed the audition as the first member of BTS. Bang PD-nim heard a lot about Namjoon and his aspiring career before and his original idea was to debut him with Iron as a hip hop duo, supposed to debut in 2011. Namjoon became also part of DNH, an underground hip hop group, together with Iron and two other members. That was when Bang PD-nim decided he wanted to create a group centered around Namjoon who would be a leader. The original line-up and genre orientation were originally completely different* but the original members dropped out one by one when the group started leaning more to the idol scene until the current lineup was created. He got his stage name thanks to his amazing rap skills. Recently, he changed his stage name to RM as he believed this name fit more to their current music orientation.
