[A SUMMER DAY IN A PROVINCE]
[INT. AKIO’S BEDROOM – DAY]
[Akio is writing a resume for a job that he’s not interested it. He keeps on shaking his right leg as he forces himself to write down his information on the paper.]
[Cicadas are heard outside, as the rays of the sun sneaks in through Akio’s bedroom window, shining on his desk, giving him adequate light. He feels it’s too blinding though.]
AKIO (annoyed): I hate this. Why does she always have to tell me what to do with my life? I’m already an adult! I really want to go to the city. I want to be a successful singer. I know it will be difficult. I might even end up just singing in the streets; but I’m sick of this place!
[Akio stops writing and goes to lie on his bed.]
AKIO: This is so annoying…!
[INT. LIVINGROOM – DAY]
[Akio’s mom was preparing lunch when she remembered an errand she was supposed to do. She puts the knife that she was using on the chopping board and looks for a basket of fruits that she bought yesterday. She places the basket of fruits on the dinner table and approaches the stairs.]
AKIO’S MOM: Akio, go to our neighbor grandma Etsuko and give these fruits to her.
[INT. AKIO’S BEDROOM – DAY]
AKIO: Great. Another errand.
[INT. LIVINGROOM – DAY]
[Akio goes out of his room and takes the basket of fruits from her mother and goes to their neighbor.]
[Grandma Etsuko has always been kind to them since Akio’s dad died when he was still a baby. To make up for all the kindness she has shown, Akio and his mom helps her do farm chores and gives her gifts.]
[EXT. STREET – DAY]
AKIO (Inner thoughts): Apples, oranges, lemons, grapes, and bananas. Huh, these are more than what mom usually gives grandma Etsuko. Hm? It looks like grandma has visitors. I better hurry and give these fruits and go back home.
[EXT. GRANDMA ETSUKO’S FRONT PORCH – DAY]
[Grandma Etsuko’s house was a rundown traditional Japanese house. She inherited it from her ancestors. All of them were farmers, including grandma Etsuko. She lived all her life in the rundown house without complaint. Akio sometimes wonders if she even had dreams of her own.]
AKIO (Inner thoughts): It’s really noisy. I hear chattering even though I’m outside. Maybe I should just leave this basket in the genkan… Mmm, nah, I should greet grandma Etsuko and give it to her personally.
HANNAH: Hello!
AKIO(Surprised): W-what? Who are you?
HANNAH: Erm… I’m a guest! Grandma Etsuko’s!
